The Hollywood Canard.
'Jews control Hollywood and the media.' The kernel is unusual — it's partly true as history: the studio founders really were mostly Jewish immigrants. The lie is everything the slogan does with that fact.
'Jews control Hollywood' stretches a true origin fact — Jewish immigrants founded the studios — across a century into a false conclusion about coordinated ethnic control and a 'Jewish agenda.' The founders' background came from exclusion, their product was conspicuously assimilationist, and today's media is run by diffuse conglomerates.
Grade the founders' background FACT; grade the control-and-agenda construction FALSE. The 'agenda' claim is self-refuting — the moguls anglicized their names, buried Jewish themes, and manufactured an idealized Christian America. Naming individuals to assert collective control is the cabal frame, not media criticism.
The kernel is real: the founders of the major film studios were mostly Jewish immigrants.
Universal's Carl Laemmle, Paramount's Adolph Zukor, Fox's William Fox, the Warner brothers, MGM's Louis B. Mayer and Samuel Goldwyn, Columbia's Harry Cohn — mostly Jewish immigrants or children of immigrants from Eastern Europe. Neal Gabler's 'An Empire of Their Own' documents it in sympathetic detail. Nothing to deny: Jewish immigrants really did, to a remarkable degree, invent Hollywood. The question is what that proves.
They built it because they were shut out of everything else — exclusion, not conspiracy.
Same cause as the banking stereotype: a door closed elsewhere. Jewish immigrants in early-1900s America were largely barred from the prestigious, WASP-dominated industries and professions. The movie business was new, looked down on as cheap entertainment, and required no pedigree or gatekeeper's permission — so locked-out immigrants rushed into the one open field and built it into a colossus. 'They founded Hollywood' and 'they were kept out of everything respectable' are the same sentence.
The 'agenda' claim is self-refuting: the moguls were aggressively assimilationist.
Far from advancing Jewish interests on screen, the moguls anglicized their names, suppressed Jewish themes, and manufactured an idealized, Christian-inflected, all-American mythology — in part to prove their belonging and deflect the antisemitism around them. Several studios were cautious about anti-Nazi films in the 1930s-40s, fearful of seeming 'too Jewish.' A group accused of pushing a Jewish agenda spent enormous effort hiding its Jewishness. The documented behavior runs the opposite way.
'Jews control the media today' — false: modern media is a handful of diffuse conglomerates.
From 'Jewish immigrants founded the studios in 1915' to 'Jews control the media in 2026' ignores a century of corporate history. Today's media is dominated by giant publicly traded conglomerates — Disney, Comcast/NBCUniversal, Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery, Netflix, Japan's Sony — run by executives, boards, and shareholders of every background, answerable to markets, not an ethnicity. Media power is worth criticizing; the target is consolidation and corporate interest, not a people. 'Some media executives are Jewish' is a cabal frame.
'Jewish control of the press' is a core Protocols and Nazi theme — this is that, updated.
Control of the press is a central claim of the forged Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and 'Jewish domination of the media' was a staple of Nazi propaganda casting newspapers and film as instruments of a Jewish plot. The modern slogan — aimed at 'Hollywood,' 'the media,' or a named Jewish executive — descends directly from that lineage and performs the same function: explaining away disliked coverage as a hidden ethnic conspiracy rather than ordinary, criticizable corporate and editorial choices.
The line we hold.
- FACT: the early studio founders were mostly Jewish immigrants (Gabler) — and they built Hollywood because they were excluded from the established industries.
- FALSE/MISLEADING: the 'Jewish agenda' claim — the moguls were assimilationists who buried Jewish content and manufactured an idealized Christian America; the documented behavior is the opposite of agenda-pushing.
- FALSE/MISLEADING: 'Jews control the media today' — modern media is diffuse publicly traded conglomerates (Disney, Comcast, Paramount, WBD, Netflix, Sony) with mixed leadership; 'some executives are Jewish' is a cabal frame.
- THE LINE: criticize media consolidation and bias by name (as we do in The Compromised Center) — that's journalism. Asserting a people controls narrative is the canard. The founders' background a century ago is irrelevant to either.
Why it matters.
The true Hollywood story is better than the lie: a generation of excluded immigrants found an industry no one wanted and turned it into the most powerful myth-making machine in history — and made of it a love letter to the country that kept them at arm's length. The canard inverts that, converting the founders' Jewishness (which they themselves minimized) into a secret purpose and extending it across a century of unrelated ownership. And it poisons a legitimate thing: criticism of concentrated media power. Every time 'the media' is used as a euphemism for 'the Jews,' it discredits the honest critique by association and hands media companies a defense they don't deserve. The canard hurts the people it claims to speak for twice — once by lying about Jews, once by sabotaging the real fight against corporate media control.
