The Hollywood canard.
“Jews control Hollywood and the media.” The kernel is one of the more unusual ones — it's partly true as history. The founders of the studios really were mostly Jewish immigrants. The lie is everything the slogan does with that fact.
We grade the real history honestly — because it's a fascinating story of exclusion and ambition — and then show why “a few immigrants founded the studios a century ago” is not “a people secretly controls what you watch and pushes an agenda.”
What this page is about
“Jews control Hollywood” is unusual among antisemitic canards because its historical kernel is real and well-documented: the men who built the major film studios in the early 20th century — Carl Laemmle, Adolph Zukor, William Fox, the Warner brothers, Louis B. Mayer, Samuel Goldwyn, Harry Cohn — were overwhelmingly Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. The historian Neal Gabler told that story sympathetically in his 1988 book, pointedly titled An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood. The founders being Jewish is not the lie.
The reason follows the pattern of the whole hub: exclusion, not conspiracy. These were immigrants locked out of the established, respectable, WASP-dominated industries — banking, heavy industry, the white-shoe professions — who poured their ambition into a brand-new, disreputable, wide-open business that no one important yet wanted: the movies. And the empire they built was aggressively, almost desperately American. The moguls assimilated hard, avoided Jewish subject matter, and manufactured an idealized mainstream America precisely to belong to it — the opposite of smuggling a “Jewish agenda” onto the screen.
We grade the founders' background FACT and the control-and-agenda construction FALSE. A handful of immigrants founding an industry a century ago is not evidence that a people runs today's media — which is owned by a few giant, publicly traded, diffusely led conglomerates — or that any coordinated ethnic agenda is being pushed. It belongs in The Oldest Lies next to its economic twin, the Rothschild myth.

The Hollywood Canard.
'Jews control Hollywood and the media.' The kernel is unusual — it's partly true as history: the studio founders really were mostly Jewish immigrants. The lie is everything the slogan does with that fact.
A true origin story, a false conclusion
The kernel is real: the founders of the major film studios were mostly Jewish immigrants.
FACTWe grant it fully, because it's true and because it's a good story. The men who built the studio system — Universal's Carl Laemmle, Paramount's Adolph Zukor, Fox's William Fox, Warner Bros.' Warner brothers, MGM's Louis B. Mayer and Samuel Goldwyn, Columbia's Harry Cohn — were, for the most part, Jewish immigrants or children of immigrants from Eastern Europe. The historian Neal Gabler's 'An Empire of Their Own' documents this in sympathetic detail. There is nothing to deny here: Jewish immigrants really did, to a remarkable degree, invent Hollywood. The question is what that fact does and doesn't prove.
They built it because they were shut out of everything else — exclusion, not conspiracy.
FACTThe cause is the same as the banking stereotype's: a door closed elsewhere. Jewish immigrants in early-1900s America were largely barred from the established, prestigious industries and professions — the banks, the law firms, the corporate boardrooms — that were dominated by a Protestant establishment hostile to outsiders. The movie business was the opposite: brand new, looked down upon as cheap entertainment for the working class, requiring no pedigree and no admission from any gatekeeper. Ambitious, locked-out immigrants rushed into the one wide-open field available to them and built it into a colossus. 'They founded Hollywood' and 'they were kept out of everything respectable' are the same sentence.
The 'agenda' claim is self-refuting: the moguls were aggressively assimilationist, not agenda-pushers.
FALSE / MISLEADINGHere the canard contradicts the very history it cites. Far from using the screen to advance Jewish interests, the studio moguls were famous for doing the reverse: they anglicized their names, suppressed Jewish themes, and manufactured an idealized, Christian-inflected, all-American mythology — small-town main streets, Andy Hardy, Christmas movies — in part to prove their own belonging and to deflect the antisemitism they knew surrounded them. In the 1930s and early '40s several studios were cautious about films condemning Nazism, fearful of being seen as 'too Jewish' or of losing foreign markets. A group accused of pushing a Jewish agenda spent enormous effort hiding its Jewishness. The 'agenda' is not just unproven; the documented behavior runs the other way.
'Jews control the media today' — false: modern media is a handful of diffuse conglomerates.
FALSE / MISLEADINGThe leap from 'Jewish immigrants founded the studios in 1915' to 'Jews control the media in 2026' ignores a century of corporate history. Today's film and media business is dominated by a small number of giant, publicly traded conglomerates — Disney, Comcast (NBCUniversal), Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery, Netflix, and Japan's Sony, among others — run by executives, boards, and shareholders of every background, answerable to markets and quarterly earnings, not to an ethnicity. Media power is a real and worthy subject of criticism, but the thing to criticize is consolidation and corporate interest, not a people. 'Some media executives are Jewish' is, once again, a cabal frame: it points at individuals to assert a collective that isn't there.
'Jewish control of the press' is a core Protocols and Nazi theme — this is that, updated.
FACTThe media version of the canard is not folk wisdom; it is a specific, pedigreed piece of antisemitic propaganda. Control of the press is one of the central claims of the forged 'Protocols of the Elders of Zion,' and 'Jewish domination of the media' was a staple of Nazi propaganda, which cast newspapers, film, and later radio as instruments of a Jewish plot to corrupt the nation. The modern slogan — whether aimed at 'Hollywood,' 'the media,' or a named Jewish executive — is the direct descendant of that lineage, and it performs the same function: to explain away any coverage someone dislikes as the product of a hidden ethnic conspiracy rather than ordinary, criticizable corporate and editorial choices.
Criticizing media consolidation and bias is journalism. Asserting ethnic control is the canard.
FACTThis is the hub's line, applied to media. We criticize media power hard and specifically — the ownership concentration, the self-censorship, the corporate capture we document in The Compromised Center, naming the companies and the executives and citing what they did. That is media criticism, and the background of any given executive is irrelevant to it. 'Jews control the media' is a different claim: a people, acting as a coordinated hidden hand over what everyone is allowed to see. The test is the subject. A named conglomerate and its documented choices is auditable. An ethnic conspiracy behind 'the media' is not — because it was never real.
The outsiders who built the inside
The true version of the Hollywood story is more interesting than the lie, and it is a story about exclusion producing invention. A generation of Jewish immigrants, barred from the citadels of American respectability, found an industry no one else wanted and turned it into the most powerful myth-making machine in human history. And what they chose to make with it was, poignantly, a love letter to the country that kept them at arm's length: an idealized America of clean small towns and happy endings, scrubbed of their own origins. They were not infiltrators pushing an agenda; they were strivers performing an Americanness they were never quite allowed to fully possess.
The canard inverts that, as these lies always do. It takes the founders' Jewishness — a fact they themselves often tried to minimize — and converts it from a biographical detail into a secret purpose, then extends it across a century of unrelated corporate ownership to the media of today. The move is identical to the Rothschild myth: take a real instance of a minority's prominence in a field it was pushed toward, and reframe it as proof of a people's hidden plan. The Protocols supplied the template — control of the press as a pillar of the imagined plot — and the Nazis industrialized it.
And it matters that the modern form is so often laundered through legitimate-sounding complaint. “The media is biased,” “Hollywood is out of touch,” “a few companies control what we see” — these can be true and are worth arguing. The canard attaches itself to them like a parasite, nudging a real critique of corporate media power toward a fake one about ethnicity. Keeping the two separate — criticizing the conglomerates by name while refusing the cabal story — is the entire discipline of The Oldest Lies.
When “the media” becomes a code word
The Hollywood canard matters because it quietly poisons a legitimate and necessary thing: criticism of concentrated media power. There are real problems with who owns the screen and the feed, and this site documents them. But every time “the media” is used as a euphemism for “the Jews,” it discredits the honest version by association and hands media companies a defense they don't deserve — because now any criticism can be waved away as bigotry. The canard hurts the people it claims to speak for twice: once by lying about Jews, and once by sabotaging the real fight against corporate media control it pretends to be waging.
- If the studio moguls spent their careers hiding their Jewishness and manufacturing an idealized Christian America, how is that evidence of a secret Jewish agenda on screen?
- Today's media is owned by a handful of publicly traded conglomerates with boards and shareholders of every background. What does “Jews control the media” do with that — engage it, or ignore it?
- If you want to criticize media power, why would you choose the one framing — ethnic conspiracy — that is both false and guaranteed to discredit your own case?
Questions worth taking seriously
But you admit the founders were Jewish. Doesn't that make the claim basically true?
It proves the kernel, not the conclusion — and the gap between them is the whole canard. “Jewish immigrants founded the studios a century ago” is true. “Jews control the media today and push an agenda” is a different claim that doesn't follow from it: ownership passed through a century of corporate consolidation to diffuse public conglomerates, and the founders themselves were assimilationists who buried Jewish content, not agenda-pushers. A true origin fact is being stretched across a hundred years and converted into a secret collective purpose. That stretch is exactly the move we isolate and reject.
So I can't say Hollywood pushes politics I dislike?
Of course you can — criticizing the content, politics, and corporate behavior of film and media companies is ordinary cultural argument, and people across the spectrum do it constantly. The line isn't “don't criticize Hollywood.” The line is the explanation you reach for. “This studio makes movies with a politics I dislike” is a content critique. “Jews use Hollywood to push an agenda” swaps the criticizable company for an uncriticizable ethnic conspiracy. The first is an argument you can have; the second is the canard, and it's both false and a conversation-ender.
