The Protocols Forgery.
The 'secret Jewish plan for world domination' is a forgery — plagiarized from an 1864 French satire that never mentioned Jews, exposed in a major newspaper over a century ago, and still passed around as if it were real. The master template of the modern conspiracy theory.
The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is one of the best-documented forgeries in the history of propaganda: fabricated in the Tsarist-police milieu c.1903, plagiarized from Maurice Joly's 1864 satire about Napoleon III, exposed by Philip Graves in The Times of London in 1921, and ruled a forgery by a Swiss court in 1935.
Kernel (thin but real): an actual book that actually circulated and influenced history. Construction (the lie): that it records a real plan rather than a stitched-together forgery. We grade the forgery FACT — the proof is textual, not inferential — and reject the 'fake but accurate' defense that keeps the hoax alive.
The Protocols is a forgery — not the record of any real meeting or plan.
It presents itself as minutes of a secret Jewish council plotting world domination. No such council, meeting, or plan existed — the document was fabricated to incite hatred of Jews. The USHMM, Britannica, and the historical mainstream describe it identically: a forgery. We grade it FACT-that-it's-a-forgery (hence the canard claim is FALSE), because the proof is textual and on the record, not inferential.
It was plagiarized from an 1864 French satire that never mentioned Jews.
Long passages were copied, sometimes almost verbatim, from Maurice Joly's 1864 'Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu' — a satire attacking Emperor Napoleon III that said nothing about Jews — plus material from Hermann Goedsche's 1868 novel 'Biarritz.' A supposed Jewish master plan was manufactured by find-and-replacing a French political satire and a pulp novel. A real conspiracy doesn't crib its villainy from a book about a French emperor.
It came out of the Tsarist secret-police milieu to blame Jews for Russia's unrest.
The Protocols first appeared in Russia c.1903 (Krushevan's newspaper) and was popularized in a 1905 edition by the mystic Sergei Nilus, out of the orbit of the Okhrana (Tsarist secret police), to cast Jews as the hidden hand behind revolutionary agitation and to justify pogroms. The exact forger is debated; the pogrom-era Russian origin is not. Propaganda built for a purpose: scapegoating a persecuted minority for an empire's instability.
It was publicly exposed as plagiarism in 1921 — and ruled a forgery in court in 1935.
Caught in public, twice. In August 1921, The Times of London's Philip Graves published articles demonstrating the plagiarism from Joly, printing the two texts side by side. In 1935, a Bern, Switzerland court ruled the Protocols a forgery and plagiarism after expert testimony. The verdict of history was in a century ago; everything since is the circulation of a document already known — in print and in court — to be fake.
Henry Ford spread half a million copies in America — then retracted in 1927.
In the 1920s Henry Ford funded ~500,000 copies and ran 'The International Jew,' a long antisemitic series drawing on the Protocols, in his Dearborn Independent — giving the forgery a mass American audience and a veneer of respectability. In 1927, under legal and public pressure, Ford issued a public retraction and apology. The man who did the most to spread the Protocols in America ultimately disowned it.
The line we hold.
- FACT: the Protocols is a forgery — plagiarized from Joly's 1864 satire + Goedsche's 1868 novel; surfaced in the Tsarist-police milieu c.1903 (Nilus 1905); exposed by Graves in The Times (1921); ruled a forgery in Bern (1935); spread by Ford (retracted 1927); made central Nazi propaganda.
- FALSE/MISLEADING: that it records a real Jewish plan or council. There was none. The 'fake but accurate / it predicted things' defense is the move that keeps a known hoax alive — and it fails: a document cribbed from a satire about Napoleon III is not evidence of anything about Jews.
- NOT ASSERTED: a single named forger (debated). The Tsarist-police origin and the plagiarism are not debated.
- THE TEMPLATE: the Protocols is the original 'secret plan' document — the architecture reused by 'globalist,' 'New World Order,' 'cultural Marxism,' and 'Great Replacement' theories, often the Protocols with the names changed.
Why it matters.
The Protocols should be dead — exposed in the world's most prominent newspaper, ruled a forgery in court, disowned by the man who spread it in America. It survives because a conspiracy theory isn't held on evidence, so it isn't released by evidence; its function is to explain a frightening, complicated world through a single hidden villain, and that function is untouched by corrections. Which is why debunking has to be more than 'it's fake': it has to show the machinery — the Joly plagiarism, the pogrom-era purpose — so the next 'secret plan' document is recognizable on sight. Named actors and cited acts are journalism; an imagined people-wide council proven by a forged document is the oldest lie. The Protocols is the purest specimen of the wrong side of that border.
