The Blood Libel.
The lie that Jews murder Christian children for their blood is nearly nine centuries old. It has no factual basis, is forbidden by Jewish law itself, and was condemned by medieval popes — and it still got thousands killed, and still circulates today in new disguises.
The blood libel — that Jews ritually murder non-Jews, especially children, for their blood — is a false accusation with no basis, contradicted by Jewish law, condemned by medieval popes, and used for eight centuries as a pretext for torture, massacre, and expulsion. Its structure survives in today's 'cabal harvesting children's blood' conspiracy theories.
Kernel (the thinnest of any): real children who really died, grief looking for a culprit. Construction: pure invention, every 'confession' extracted under torture. We grade the accusation FALSE — the evidence for it has always been zero; the evidence against it (theological, papal, forensic) is overwhelming.
The core accusation — Jews murder Christian children for their blood — is false, with no factual basis.
There has never been credible evidence that such ritual killings occurred; every case that produced a 'confession' produced it through torture. Historians and every major scholarly and religious authority treat the accusation as a fabricated myth, not a contested event. This is not a 'both sides' matter — the accusation is false, and has been every time it was made.
It originated in medieval England with the death of William of Norwich in 1144.
In 1144 a boy named William was found dead near Norwich, England; years later the monk Thomas of Monmouth blamed local Jews for a ritual killing — the first developed blood-libel narrative. It spread (the 1255 'Little Saint Hugh' of Lincoln case led to 19 Jews executed) and recurred across Europe for centuries. FACT that this is the documented origin and pattern; the underlying ritual-murder charge was false in every instance.
It is contradicted by Jewish law, which forbids consuming blood at all.
Jewish dietary law (kashrut) prohibits consuming blood in any form — kosher slaughter is designed to drain it, and even an egg with a spot of blood is discarded. The idea of a Jewish ritual requiring human blood inverts one of Judaism's clearest, oldest prohibitions. The libel doesn't just lack evidence; it asks you to believe a religion built around draining blood from food secretly centers a blood sacrament. The theological opposite of the truth.
Medieval popes condemned it as baseless — and were ignored.
The accusation was debunked in its own time by the highest authorities of the society that produced it. Several medieval popes rejected the ritual-murder charge; Innocent IV condemned it in the 13th century, and later popes followed. It shows the libel was recognized as a lie by contemporaries who had every cultural reason to believe it — and that official debunking alone doesn't kill a useful myth. The condemnations are on the record; so are the pogroms that followed them.
It killed for eight centuries — Trent 1475, Damascus 1840, the Beilis trial 1911-13, Kielce 1946.
A body count, not an abstraction. Simon of Trent (1475) led to the torture and execution of the city's Jews; the Damascus affair (1840) saw Jewish leaders tortured on a ritual-murder charge; the Russian Empire tried Menahem Mendel Beilis (1911-13) for alleged ritual murder in Kyiv (acquitted after worldwide outcry); and in 1946, after the Holocaust, a blood-libel rumor helped trigger the Kielce pogrom in Poland, murdering dozens of Jewish survivors. Across 800 years, the same lie, the same dead.
Its logic survives today — the QAnon 'adrenochrome' myth is a direct descendant.
The blood libel changed costume. The modern theory that a secret elite harvests children's blood — QAnon 'adrenochrome,' the 'Pizzagate' cabal — reproduces the libel's exact structure: a hidden powerful group preying on children's blood via a secret ritual. Scholars of antisemitism repeatedly draw the line. Graded PROBABLY TRUE (not FACT) because 'descended from' is an interpretive claim, not a dated document — but the resemblance isn't subtle, and these myths frequently resolve to the same old antisemitic target.
The line we hold.
- FALSE/MISLEADING: the ritual-murder accusation itself — zero evidence ever, every 'confession' extracted under torture; forbidden by Jewish law; condemned by medieval popes.
- FACT: the documented history — William of Norwich (1144) origin; papal condemnations (Innocent IV); and the eight-century body count (Trent 1475, Damascus 1840, Beilis 1911-13, Kielce 1946).
- PROBABLY TRUE (interpretive, fenced): the modern 'cabal harvesting children's blood' theories (QAnon adrenochrome, Pizzagate) are structural descendants — four-part match, scholars concur, but 'descended from' isn't a dated document so we don't grade it FACT.
- NOT ASSERTED: that the children weren't real or didn't die — many did; their deaths were exploited, not invented. The kernel is real grief; the construction is pure invention.
Why it matters.
What's striking about the blood libel isn't just its cruelty but its persistence in the teeth of constant refutation — condemned by popes, exposed as torture-driven, contradicted by the plainest facts of Jewish practice, and still going, because it was never about evidence. It gave grief a villain and rulers a pretext. The 20th century didn't retire it — Nazi propaganda revived its imagery, and at Kielce it killed survivors who had just escaped the camps. The sober lesson: officially debunking a canard doesn't end it; what ends its power is enough people understanding its machinery. And the structure is what travels — a hidden group, children as victims, blood as currency, a secret ritual. When a modern theory reaches for that skeleton, you're not looking at something new; you're looking at the oldest lie asking to be believed one more time.
