Seven Terrorists Eliminated.
'Within a few minutes, five, six or seven people are killed. The protocol says: seven terrorists eliminated. But no, it's just seven people who crossed an intersection.' — an Israeli reservist to Der Spiegel.
A knowledge-control story at its purest: ~10 Israeli soldiers tell Der Spiegel their units ambushed civilians in Gaza and logged the dead as terrorists — the official 'terrorists eliminated' count falsified at the moment of death.
The investigation + procedure = FACT; the conduct = PROBABLY TRUE (testimony, IDF denial carried); uniform-policy = posed, not asserted.
The procedure: the 'straw widow.'
Der Spiegel reported, on a reservist's testimony, a procedure his unit used repeatedly — 'Alman Kasch,' Hebrew for 'straw widow': a unit takes a concealed position in a non-evacuated area; Palestinians who don't know soldiers are there are shelled when they approach; those who come to help the wounded are shot too. 'Within a few minutes, five, six or seven people are killed.' That this is the reported procedure is not in dispute.
The record falsified at the source: logged as terrorists.
The dead in these ambushes were entered as terrorists regardless of who they were: 'The protocol says: seven terrorists eliminated. But no, it's just seven people who crossed an intersection.' The reservist (252nd Division) said his brigade killed 160–170 people over 80+ days in the Netzarim corridor, where 'there was no fighting, no attacks by Hamas,' that only one was even suspected of being armed, and that 'all of these dead were reported as terrorists.' First-hand testimony, published by a major outlet and corroborated — serious and specific, but not an adjudicated finding.
Not one soldier: a ten-source investigation.
The viral screenshot quotes one reservist; the investigation is broader — Der Spiegel built it on ~10 Israeli military personnel describing troops killing civilians and recording them as terrorists. Middle East Eye and Common Dreams reported it in English, and it echoes earlier soldier testimony (Breaking the Silence's 'kill zone' accounts in Netzarim, via Haaretz). The weight of sourcing is the point.
What it does to the count.
The war is measured in part by the ratio of 'terrorists' to civilians killed, and official statements lean on high militant-death counts. If civilians killed in ambushes are logged as terrorists at the moment of death, that count is corrupted at its source — the raw data falsified before it becomes a statistic. PROBABLY TRUE that this occurred in the units these soldiers describe; the scale across the whole war is not asserted. The mechanism — kill, then classify the dead as the enemy — is how a casualty record is manufactured.
How this page is graded.
- FACT: the Der Spiegel investigation and its sourcing (~10 soldiers); the 'straw widow' procedure as reported; and the corroboration by Middle East Eye and Common Dreams.
- PROBABLY TRUE: the conduct and the falsified logging — civilians ambushed and recorded as terrorists; 160–170 in Netzarim with no fighting, only one suspected armed. First-hand testimony, multiply sourced, not adjudicated; the IDF denial is carried.
- SOME SMOKE (posed, not asserted): that this was uniform, written, top-down IDF policy across all of Gaza — ~10 soldiers about their units is not proof of universal policy. FENCE: Hamas's Oct 7 killings and hostage-taking were war crimes, not exonerated.
Why it matters.
'We do not kill, we eliminate' is an accounting entry: the language converts a person into a target retroactively, so the killing can be recorded as something other than what it was. That's why it sits in Who Controls What You Get to Know — the deepest damage is to the truth: when the dead are catalogued as the enemy at the moment they fall, every downstream number inherits the lie. It's the ground-level version of the Nasser Hospital retroactive-incrimination piece, the bottom-up twin of the atrocity-claims audit, and kin to the Hannibal page where Israeli deaths were removed from the record — a war whose record is curated from both ends.
