What Happened to Bobby Kennedy Jr.?
Environmental hero to anti-vaccine disinformation-for-profit — built on a retracted article, grown into a $23M operation, anchored on Samoa, now running U.S. public health.
He found that fear sells. A retracted 2005 vaccine claim became a movement, became a multimillion-dollar group — and in Samoa, 2019, it helped turn a broken vaccination program into 83 dead, most of them babies.
We grade the arc on the record and fence the overclaim: he did not single-handedly kill 83 children. What he did do is documented, and bad enough.
The hero he was: a genuine environmental record.
Decades as a real environmental lawyer — Hudson Riverkeeper chief prosecuting attorney, founder of the Waterkeeper Alliance, winning actual cases against polluters. The fall is from a real height, which is why millions still extend him the benefit of the doubt.
The turn: an anti-vaccine career launched on a retracted article.
2005's 'Deadly Immunity' (Rolling Stone + Salon) claimed thimerosal causes autism. It was wrong in load-bearing ways — he claimed 187x the EPA mercury limit; the real figure was ~40% over — and Salon ran five corrections before deleting it in 2011; Rolling Stone retracted it the same year. The thimerosal-autism link does not exist. The second act was built on a claim his own publishers disowned.
The machine: disinformation that paid very well.
As chairman of Children's Health Defense — a leading source of online vaccine misinformation — Kennedy presided over revenue climbing from ~$13K (2014) to $470K (2015, when he joined) to $6.8M (2020), $16M (2021), $23.5M (2022). He was paid >$20,000/week; took $326,056 for ~3.5 months in 2023 before resigning to run for president. Not a hobby — the business.
Samoa, 2019: 83 dead — and where he fits, precisely.
July 2018: two nurses killed two babies with an MMR dose mixed using expired muscle relaxant (one convicted of manslaughter); the government suspended MMR for months and vaccination collapsed ~70%→~30%. Into that moment, June 2019, Kennedy visited Samoa — trip arranged by anti-vax activist Edwin Tamasese, paid by Children's Health Defense. Measles cases Sept; epidemic declared Oct 16; 83 dead, mostly infants. In Nov, mid-outbreak, Kennedy wrote the PM suggesting 'a defective vaccine.' Facts = FACT. We do NOT assert he caused it (the 2018 tragedy did) — he amplified distrust at the worst moment and sowed doubt mid-outbreak; experts tie his visit to a worsened crisis.
The denial: he said he had 'nothing to do' with it. That is false.
Kennedy claimed he had 'nothing to do' with the outbreak and that his 2019 visit wasn't about vaccines. The record refutes both: the trip was paid by his anti-vaccine group, arranged by an anti-vaccine activist, and he lobbied the PM to doubt the vaccine during the outbreak. Mother Jones, NBC, and congressionally obtained emails document it. The denial itself is FALSE/MISLEADING — his own paper trail refutes it.
And now he runs U.S. public health.
The man who launched his second act on a retracted article, built a $23M misinformation group, and flew into a dying island to question the vaccine is now U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services — presiding over the return of measles at home and the gutting of the agencies built to stop it. That's the point of the arc, not an irony.
How this page is graded.
- FACT: the environmental record; the 'Deadly Immunity' retraction; the CHD revenue curve and his pay; the Samoa chain (2018 tragedy, rate collapse, his CHD-funded visit, the Nov 2019 letter, 83 deaths).
- FALSE / MISLEADING: his claim he had 'nothing to do' with Samoa / that the visit wasn't vaccine-related — refuted by his group's emails and his own letter.
- NOT ASSERTED (fenced): that he single-handedly caused the 83 deaths. The 2018 nurse tragedy and the suspension triggered the collapse; he amplified and exploited it. Expert attribution of a worsened crisis is cited, not laundered into sole cause.
Why it matters.
Sowing Division tracks those who fracture a shared reality for gain. Vaccine distrust is among the most lethal forms, and Kennedy monetized it for two decades — a retracted claim turned into a $23M-a-year group. Samoa is what that looks like when it lands on real children. And the man who did it now sits atop the federal public-health apparatus, where the same instincts play out at national scale — the subject of Make America Healthy Again?.
