The simplest test of whether 'pro-life' means what it says: the movement and states most committed to banning abortion also put more people to death than anywhere in the democratic world.

The movement and states most committed to abortion bans also lead the democratic world in executions and are working to expand them — hard to square, outside the consistent-life-ethic minority, with a principle about the sanctity of life.

The Trump administration carried out 13 federal executions in seven months — 3x the federal total of the previous six decades.

Texas and Florida — two of the most anti-abortion states — lead the nation in executions.
FACT
Texas has executed 600+ people since 1982, more than any other state; DeSantis's Florida executes at a record modern pace (ProPublica) even as most of the country abandons the death penalty. The states most identified with 'life' before birth carry out the most state killing after it.

In 2025 the administration moved to expand the federal death penalty and lifted the moratorium.

A Jan 20, 2025 executive order directed the AG to seek the death penalty in more federal cases (cop-killers; capital offenses by immigrants without lawful status), to press states, and to secure lethal-injection drugs. AG Bondi lifted the Garland moratorium in Feb 2025; the administration later pushed for executions in DC. An active, current expansion.

A politics that leads the world in executions while claiming the mantle of life is not organized around the sanctity of life.

Each fact is documented; the throughline is an inference from the consistency — the same officials/states that move hardest to end abortion move hardest to expand executions. Counter carried: the consistent-life-ethic minority. But for the movement that sets policy, 'life' is invoked to restrict reproduction and set aside at the execution chamber.
§7 · Why it matters now
The cleanest test of a principle.
The death penalty is the most direct test the pro-life claim can face: the deliberate, state-sanctioned ending of a life. A movement that opposed the taking of life would be its fiercest enemy; instead the coalition that dominates anti-abortion policy is its most enthusiastic champion. Same pattern the maternal-death ledger shows from the other end of life — a label that protects life selectively, and spends it where the politics point.
