Pistachios, Water, and Power.
Two billionaires got a piece of California's public water in a closed-door meeting, grew an empire of nuts on it, and lobbied to keep a rival country's crop out. Most of it is on the record.
The harder story under the viral pistachio bar: how the Resnicks' empire was built — a privatized public aquifer, an enormous water footprint, and a tariff wall against Iran — and where the mythology around it has to be fenced off.
We grade the documented parts as fact and the overreaches as overreaches. This subject is swarming with the latter.
A $74M public water bank became theirs in a closed-door meeting.
California's DWR spent ~$74M of public money building the Kern Water Bank (stores up to 1.5M acre-feet). In 1994, at a closed Monterey meeting, the largest State Water Project contractors rewrote the rules — the 'Monterey Amendments' — moving developed water out of public control. Via Westside Mutual, the Resnicks hold ~57% of the bank. A public asset, built with public dollars, passed into private hands in a room the public wasn't in.
More water than every home in LA — but they do NOT own 'most of California's water.'
Mother Jones (2016): the Resnicks' ~140 sq mi of orchards use ~117 billion gallons/year — in some years more than all LA homes combined (FACT). The escalation — that they 'own/control most of California's water' — is FALSE/MISLEADING, debunked by Snopes AND the California Water Impact Network (an environmental group otherwise critical of them). The real story doesn't need the exaggeration.
The war on Iranian pistachios: a 241% tariff, an embargo, and a lobby that likes it.
Iran and the US are the pistachio superpowers. Iranian in-shell pistachios have faced a 241% US tariff since the mid-1980s, reinforced by the Iran embargo; by 2008 the US overtook Iran, and Wonderful controls the bulk of the US crop. The pistachio lobby (Wonderful at its center) works to keep those barriers — a competitive moat. Tariff/embargo/lobbying = FACT; that US Iran-hawkishness is driven by or meaningfully serves these interests = PROBABLY TRUE/posed (Pistachio Wars' argument), not asserted causation.
The politics, cited and fenced: documented giving, posed as a who-profits question.
Per watchdog compilations of filings, the Resnicks gave ~$2.4M to Friends of the IDF (2015–2022), Stewart reported on its board (PROBABLY TRUE); $50M to Israel's Technion in 2022 (FACT). The honest framing is interest-alignment: a fortune that depends on weakening Iran as a competitor also funds Iran-hawkish and pro-Israel causes. Posed as a question, not asserted as causation; donations are not treated as evidence of a plot.
The claims we will NOT make: the conspiracy tier.
'They own most of California's water' — FALSE (debunked). 'A Zionist oligarch had Iranian pistachio factories bombed' — no credible evidence; conspiratorial sources; PURE SPECULATION at best, and we won't repeat it. We reject the antisemitic framing that explains documented business/political choices by ethnicity or faith. The real record — privatized aquifer, huge footprint, tariff wall, cited giving — is strong and sober, and is weakened by the mythology, not helped by it.
How this page is graded.
- FACT: the Kern Water Bank's public build and privatization (~57% Resnick); the 117B-gallon footprint; the 241% Iranian-pistachio tariff, embargo and lobbying; the $50M Technion gift.
- PROBABLY TRUE: ~$2.4M FIDF giving (filings via watchdogs); that Iran-hawkishness serves their aligned commercial interest (posed, Pistachio Wars).
- FALSE / MISLEADING or SPECULATION: 'own most of California's water'; 'Zionist plot'/'bombed Iranian factories' — named and refused, not laundered.
Why it matters.
Self-Dealing tracks how public goods become private fortunes. The Kern Water Bank is almost a perfect specimen: a reservoir the public paid to build, reassigned in a closed room, now underwriting a private nut empire in a drought state. Add a tariff wall that turns foreign policy into a moat and a wholesome-image PR machine, and it's the same laundering move as Foodwashing — applied to a family instead of a flag. The documented giving is why it cross-references Israeli Influence: as a question about aligned interests, held to the same evidence bar.
