He predicted his own “suicide.”

John Barnett spent 32 years inspecting Boeing planes and seven more warning that the company was building them badly. He told a friend that if he turned up dead, it would not be by his own hand. Then, mid-case against Boeing, he turned up dead.

This is the case in this thread that most tempts overreach, so it gets the strictest grading. Two things are true at once, and a fair page holds both: his death was ruled a suicide — with a note in his own handwriting — and he predicted, on the record, that a “suicide” is exactly what would be staged. We grade the ruling, the prediction, and the murder theory separately.

Barnett's safety complaints were substantiated — including scores of missing non-conforming parts and defective 787 oxygen systems

US Federal Aviation Administration / Boeing records · Compliance review finding · 2017

Barnett was not a disgruntled crank. An FAA review and Boeing's own records backed his central safety warnings on the 787 line — the substance that makes his death worth examining at all.

§1 · Summary Brief

What this page is about

John “Mitch” Barnett was a Boeing quality-control manager for 32 years. From 2010 to 2017 he worked at Boeing's 787 Dreamliner plant in North Charleston, South Carolina, where he documented defective emergency-oxygen systems, metal shavings near flight-control wiring, and pressure to overlook faults. In 2017 he filed a federal (AIR21) whistleblower complaint. His central warnings were substantiated by an FAA review and Boeing's own records.

On March 9, 2024, during a break in depositions for his retaliation case against Boeing, Barnett was found dead in his truck in a Charleston hotel parking lot, of a gunshot wound. The Charleston County coroner ruled it a suicide; police closed the investigation that May. A note in his handwriting was reportedly found. And yet — Barnett had told a friend that if he died, it would not be suicide. This page grades each strand of that on its own.

§2 · What Happened

The timeline, plainly

  • 1985–2017
Barnett works at Boeing for 32 years as a quality manager, the last seven (2010–2017) at the 787 Dreamliner plant in North Charleston, SC.
  • 2017
He files an FAA AIR21 whistleblower complaint alleging serious safety defects. An FAA review confirms dozens of non-conforming parts had gone missing on the line; his oxygen-system warnings are documented.
  • 2019
Barnett goes public (BBC and others), warning that up to a quarter of the emergency oxygen systems on some 787s could fail. Boeing disputes his characterizations but its own records corroborate key claims.
  • 2021
OSHA closes his complaint in Boeing's favor; Barnett appeals and amends it, alleging retaliation — a hostile campaign that damaged his career and health.
  • Mar 7–9, 2024
Barnett sits for depositions in Charleston in his case against Boeing. On March 9, during a break, he fails to appear; he is found dead in his truck of a gunshot wound. A note in his hand is reportedly recovered.
  • Mar 11 / May 17, 2024
The Charleston County coroner rules the death a suicide; the Charleston Police Department concludes its investigation. His legal case continues under his estate.
§3 · Graded Claims

The record, claim by claim

Barnett's death was officially ruled a suicide.

FACT

This is the record and we state it plainly. The Charleston County coroner ruled the death a self-inflicted gunshot (March 11, 2024); the Charleston Police Department closed its investigation on May 17, 2024. Reporting states a note in Barnett's own handwriting was found in the vehicle. A page that ignores this isn't investigating — it's advocating.

Barnett predicted, on the record, that a 'suicide' would be staged.

FACT

This is what makes the case genuinely unsettling, and it is a fact that he said it: a family friend recounted, and multiple outlets reported, that Barnett had said words to this effect and even anticipated the exact 'he killed himself' framing. Graded FACT as to the statement having been made and reported. Note the limit precisely: this is the account of people close to him, not something investigators independently corroborated — and a documented premonition is not, by itself, evidence of murder.

No, I ain't scared — but if anything happens to me, it's not suicide.
  • Family-friend account, widely reported (ABC, CBS, Newsweek), March 2024

Barnett was murdered / the suicide ruling is false.

SOME SMOKE

Here is where the narrative outruns the record, and we say so. The anomalies are real — he died mid-deposition in a case that threatened Boeing, and he had predicted this exact outcome. But the physical evidence supports the ruling: his own vehicle, and a note in his own handwriting. No public evidence establishes homicide. Graded SOME SMOKE: the timing and the prediction are legitimately eyebrow-raising, but 'murdered' is unproven, and we will not assert it. The strongest thing the record supports is not murder — it's the retaliation case below.

  • No homicide finding by the coroner or police; investigation closed as suicide

Boeing retaliated against Barnett, and his safety complaints were real.

FACT

This is the provable, damning core — and it needs no death to matter. Barnett's AIR21 complaint alleged, and evidence substantiated, serious 787 safety defects; the FAA confirmed missing non-conforming parts; he was in active litigation alleging Boeing had run a retaliation campaign against him. Whatever the manner of his death, a major defense-and-aerospace contractor was the defendant across the deposition table, and the whistleblower was right about the planes.

§4 · Record vs Narrative

Where the record stops

  • A prediction is not a proof. That Barnett foresaw a “suicide” narrative is chilling and true — and it is still not evidence that he was killed. People under sustained pressure sometimes both fear for their lives and take them. Both can be true; neither cancels the other.
  • The note cuts the other way — state it. A note reportedly in his own handwriting is real evidence for the ruling. A credible page does not hide the facts that complicate its most dramatic reading; it grades them.
  • The corporate story doesn't need the murder theory. The documented scandal — unsafe planes, a substantiated whistleblower, a retaliation case, a man dead in the middle of it — is damning on its own terms. Reaching past the evidence for “they killed him” trades a strong, provable indictment for a weak, unprovable one.
§5 · Why It Matters

The anchor case for a careful question

Barnett is the anchor of a thread this site is building — people who carried inconvenient knowledge and then died in contested circumstances. He earns the anchor slot precisely because his case is mainstream-documented and honestly graded: the safety complaints are real, the retaliation case is real, the prediction is real, and the murder theory is unproven — all at once. That is the standard every other case in this thread has to meet. It connects to the Military Grift hub, where the incentives of the big defense-and-aerospace contractors are tracked.

§6 · FAQ

Questions worth taking seriously

If you admit it was ruled a suicide, why cover it at all?

Because the provable part is already a serious story: a substantiated Boeing whistleblower died mid-deposition in his retaliation case, after predicting a staged suicide. We don't need to prove murder to find that worth documenting — and grading it honestly is the whole point.

Doesn't the note prove it was suicide and end the story?

The note is real evidence for the ruling, and we state it. It does not erase the documented safety scandal or the retaliation case, which stand on their own. We grade the ruling a fact, the murder theory unproven, and the corporate wrongdoing a fact.
