Foodwashing.
A viral chocolate bar, and the two documented things it sits on: a regime laundering its name, and a supply chain built on a water grab. The sweetness is the part you were meant to notice.
'Foodwashing' is sportswashing with a snack: use something people love to make an ugly record go down easier. The craze was organic — what it flatters and distracts from is the story.
We grade the hard facts as facts, the arms-to-Sudan finding as strong-but-denied, and the 'planted to bury the news' theory as speculation. The honest version is more interesting.
Dubai chocolate went viral on its own. It was not planted.
Created in 2021 by Fix Dessert Chocolatier (Sarah Hamouda + Yezen Alani) as 'Can't Get Knafeh Of It'; it exploded after a Dec 2023 TikTok by influencer Maria Vehera hit tens of millions of views, and Fix's orders jumped from single digits to thousands a day. Organic and well-documented. The honest story starts here.
The name it flatters: a ruler a British court found had his own daughters abducted.
A 2020 UK High Court fact-finding judgment found Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum ordered the abduction of daughters Shamsa (Cambridge, 2000) and Latifa (2002; recaptured at sea 2018), and ran a campaign of intimidation against ex-wife Princess Haya. Findings of a court, graded FACT.
The UAE stands accused of arming a paramilitary in Sudan — strong evidence, official denial.
A UN Panel of Experts found UAE-linked supply lines moving arms toward the RSF (accused of genocide in Darfur) via Chad; HRW ('Fanning the Flames,' 2024) and Amnesty reached compatible findings, with serial-number matches on recovered weapons. The UAE denies it. PROBABLY TRUE: multi-source and credible, but officially denied and not adjudicated.
Foodwashing: the state didn't start the trend — it rode it.
No conspiracy needed — an image machine met a lucky break. CNN's Dubai travel coverage has disclosed destination sponsorship; the UAE funds influencer 'academies' and film rebates conditioned on flattering portrayals. On Sept 13, 2024 Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan announced an exclusive 'Emirati Halwa' Fix bar on his own Instagram — an official royal collaboration tying the phenomenon to the ruling family. Apparatus, sponsored coverage, and the Hamdan collab are all FACT (the last via Gulf News).
The amplification machine: license the influencers, criminalize the criticism.
The UAE built a legal machine that rewards state-approved glamour and punishes the rest. Paid influencers have needed an NMC license since 2018; the 2025 regime (Federal Decree-Law 55/2023) requires business + media + advertiser licenses, and content must 'uphold national values' incl. 'state sovereignty' and 'institutional reputation.' Fines reach AED 1M (AED 2M repeat) with criminal liability; the cybercrime law (34/2021) criminalizes content harming the country's reputation. Gush about a chocolate bar = safe; post about migrant-labor abuse or trafficking = fines, deportation, prosecution. The real engine beneath 'foodwashing.'
Who profits from the sweet part: the Resnicks, their water, and their politics.
The craze drove a ~35% pistachio price jump and a global shortage. California = ~99% of US pistachios, dominated by the Resnicks' Wonderful Company. 'Pistachio Wars' (2024, Yasha Levine; EP Adam McKay) traces their Kern Water Bank control (more water than LA) and argues their pro-Israel / Iran-hawk giving aligns with weakening Iran, their pistachio rival. Water/crop dominance = FACT; ~$2.4M to FIDF (2015–22, filings via watchdogs) + Stewart on its board = PROBABLY TRUE; $50M to the Technion (2022) = FACT; Iran motive = attributed.
What's documented, and exactly where it stops — a ladder.
FACT: the reputation apparatus, influencer licensing, criticism bans, and a royal collab bar — a machine built to amplify glamour and suppress scrutiny. SOME SMOKE: that the trend was actively leveraged to crowd out the UAE's human-rights coverage — real motive and machine, but no smoking gun aimed at specific headlines. PURE SPECULATION: that money 'seeded' this bar (its early virality was one organic video), and the older claim that 'Dubai chocolate' was a coprophilia euphemism the dessert overwrote (the slang was 'Dubai porta potty,' not 'chocolate' — a later name collision). We name the rungs so nobody has to guess.
How this page is graded.
- FACT: organic origin; the UK court's abduction findings; the image apparatus, influencer licensing and criticism bans; the Hamdan collab; the Resnicks' pistachio and water dominance; the Technion gift.
- PROBABLY TRUE: the UAE→RSF arms finding (UN/HRW/Amnesty, officially denied); the ~$2.4M FIDF giving from filings via watchdogs.
- SOME SMOKE: that the trend was actively leveraged to crowd out the UAE's human-rights coverage — real machine and motive, no smoking gun.
- SPECULATION: that money seeded this specific bar; the 'Dubai chocolate = scat euphemism the dessert overwrote' claim (slang was 'porta potty'); the Iran-interest motive is Pistachio Wars' attributed argument.
Why it matters.
The Outrage & Apathy Economy runs on two tracks: keep the engaged fighting each other, and keep everyone else pleasantly distracted. Foodwashing is the second — not a lie, just a warm feeling pointed at a place with a cold record. No one had to plan it; sponsored travel segments, paid influencers, and a genuinely tasty product are enough to leave millions associating 'Dubai' with a treat instead of a courtroom finding — while the bar quietly enriches the people who drained a public aquifer. It links to Self-Dealing and Israeli Influence.
