Don't Name the Funders.
Podcaster Shawn Ryan built an audience as a follow-the-money truth-teller. He's also a private investor in the surveillance and defense-tech companies funded by the exact venture firms a guest says she was told not to name — on a surveillance-state episode that was then shelved.
A host who sells independent, follow-the-money scrutiny of the surveillance state holds undisclosed stakes in the defense/surveillance companies — Anduril, Shield AI — and the venture money (a16z, Thiel's Founders Fund) at the center of that story, the same firm that leads Flock Safety. That is a textbook, public-record conflict of interest.
The COI is documented in public filings and his own profile, independent of the guest's account; the claim the episode was spiked to protect his investments is graded SOME SMOKE — her testimony and a reasonable inference, not a finding. Ryan's non-response carried.
Shawn Ryan — a surveillance-state 'truth-teller' — is personally invested in surveillance/defense-tech firms.
Per his public professional listings, Ryan is an investor in Anduril (from Oct 2025) and Shield AI (from Nov 2025), plus Sesh, INVI MindHealth, Laser Isotope Separation Technologies and others, and co-founder of Glacier. Not a crime — but the man platforming 'follow the money' on the surveillance state is inside it as an investor.
Those companies are backed by the exact investors the guest says she was told not to name.
Anduril — a Ryan investment — was co-led by Andreessen Horowitz (with Thrive) in its $5B Series H (May 2026, $61B valuation), and Peter Thiel's Founders Fund led its prior 2025 round and backed every round since co-founder Trae Stephens (a Founders Fund GP) started it in 2017. Shield AI is likewise an a16z portfolio company. The funders named as off-limits are the funders behind the host's holdings.
Flock Safety — the company the episode was about — is led by the same investor, a16z.
Per our own prior reporting, Andreessen Horowitz is Flock Safety's lead investor — it led Flock's $150M Series D (2021) and $275M Series F (March 2025, $7.5B valuation). So the firm a guest says she was told not to name on a surveillance-state episode is both the lead backer of the surveillance company at issue and a backer of the host's own defense stakes. The overlap is in the funding records.
Anduril, one of Ryan's investments, is building a business in Israel — including MoD sales.
In February 2026, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey made a quiet, undisclosed two-day Israel visit, meeting PM Netanyahu, senior defense officials, and ~10 local startups, coordinated with Israel's MoD R&D directorate; Anduril is in talks to set up a local Israeli operation and has sent delegations to sell its products to Israel's Ministry of Defense. Documented context for where one of the host's investments points — not an accusation against him.
The guest's account: told not to name the funders, the episode shelved — her testimony, not our finding.
theleahfiles says she prepared for weeks to follow the money on the surveillance state and TPUSA, was told right before filming she couldn't name names — specifically a16z and Thiel on Flock's funding — and the episode was shelved/watered down. FACT that she has publicly made this account, internally consistent with the documented conflict; but it's one person's first-person account of a private editorial decision, the motive (protecting the host's investments) is an inference, and Ryan hasn't publicly responded. Reported as her account; the public-record conflict carries the weight.
The line we hold.
- The conflict of interest is public-record FACT and does NOT depend on the guest's account: Ryan's Anduril/Shield AI stakes (his own listings), their a16z/Founders Fund backing (public reporting), and a16z as Flock's lead investor (our own prior piece).
- SOME SMOKE: the claim the episode was spiked to protect his investments — the guest's testimony plus a reasonable inference, not a finding. Ryan has not publicly responded; carried.
- Investing in defense tech is legal and common — not the charge. The charge is undisclosed conflict: a follow-the-money host with money in the trail, and viewers not told.
- 'Independent media' has owners too: an investor-host answering to the same venture money as the legacy outlets is subject to the same pull. The filter moved; it didn't disappear.
Why it matters.
A Who Controls What You Get to Know story and a Tech Right story at once. The same venture firms — Andreessen Horowitz, Thiel's Founders Fund — that bankroll the camera network watching your town (Flock) also sit behind the autonomous-weapons startups a major independent host has chosen to invest in. When the people positioned as outsider critics of surveillance are financially inside the surveillance-and-defense economy, 'alternative' media becomes another place the same money can decide what gets said. It needs no secret order to spike a tape — only an undisclosed conflict and an audience that trusts the brand. We publish both the record and the guest's account, labeled for what they are, and invite Ryan to respond.
