“Dear Lord Rothschild.”

The founding document of the modern state of Israel — the 1917 Balfour Declaration — opens by addressing a Rothschild. Decades earlier, one Rothschild's money kept the first Jewish settlements alive. This is real history, and it is not hidden: it is a boulevard, a foundation, and a family archive.

That last part is the whole point. The Rothschild role in Israel's founding is one of the most openly documented facts in modern history — which is exactly what separates it from the antisemitic myth that the family secretly engineers world events. We cover the record. We reject the fantasy. Getting the line between them right is the job.

“Dear Lord Rothschild” — Britain pledges support for a Jewish national home, in a letter addressed to Walter Rothschild

UK Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour · Diplomatic letter (Balfour Declaration) · November 2, 1917

The Balfour Declaration, the diplomatic cornerstone of Israel's founding, was written as a personal letter to Lord (Walter) Rothschild for transmission to the Zionist Federation — the Rothschild name is on the founding record itself.

§1 · Summary Brief

What this page is about

Two documented threads connect the Rothschild family to the founding of Israel. First, Baron Edmond de Rothschild of the French branch personally financed the first wave of modern Jewish settlement in Ottoman Palestine from the 1880s — so extensively that he is remembered as “The Benefactor” and the “Father of the Yishuv.” Second, the Balfour Declaration of 1917 — Britain's pledge to support a Jewish national home, the diplomatic foundation stone of the state — was written as a letter to Lord (Walter) Rothschild of the British branch.

None of this is secret. It is commemorated on Tel Aviv's central boulevard, in a family foundation that still operates in Israel, and in the Rothschild Archive's own records. This page documents that open history and grades it — and it draws a hard line between the record and the “Rothschilds control the world” conspiracy theory, which is a separate, fabricated thing we do not endorse.

What we are NOT saying
We are not claiming the Rothschild family secretly controls Israel, world finance, or world events; that they “created” Israel to rule it; or anything resembling the antisemitic conspiracy literature (the forged Protocols and its descendants). Those claims are false and we reject them. Documented philanthropy and a public diplomatic letter are not a hidden cabal — and treating the real, public record as taboo is what lets the myth fester. We document; we don't insinuate.
§2 · Graded Claims

The record, claim by claim

Baron Edmond de Rothschild personally financed the first modern Jewish settlements in Palestine.

FACT

From the 1880s, Baron Edmond James de Rothschild of the French branch bankrolled the First Aliyah colonies — funding Rishon LeZion, Zichron Ya'akov, Rosh Pina, and aiding Petah Tikva, Hadera and others; more than thirty settlements were founded with his support between 1880 and 1895. In 1924 he established the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association (PICA), which acquired over 125,000 acres and financed dozens of communities. He is known in Israeli history as 'The Benefactor' (HaNadiv HaYadua) and the 'Father of the Yishuv.'

The Balfour Declaration was addressed to Lord Rothschild.

FACT

On November 2, 1917, British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour sent the declaration — Britain's pledge to support 'the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people' — as a letter to Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation. The single most important diplomatic document behind Israel's creation is, literally, a letter to a Rothschild.

Dear Lord Rothschild, I have much pleasure in conveying to you, on behalf of His Majesty's Government, the following declaration of sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations…

The Rothschild role is publicly commemorated, not concealed.

FACT

Tel Aviv's central avenue — laid out by the Ahuzat Bayit society that founded the city on the dunes north of Jaffa in 1909 — was renamed Rothschild Boulevard in December 1910 in honor of Baron Edmond. The Edmond de Rothschild Foundation still operates in Israel; the Baron and his wife are interred at Ramat Hanadiv ('The Benefactor's Heights'); and the family maintains a public archive of the whole enterprise. This is history the principals were, and their descendants are, proud of — the opposite of a cover-up.

Edmond's role was decisive to the early settlements' survival — but he clashed with the settlers and with political Zionism.

PROBABLY TRUE

Historians widely credit the Baron's money with keeping the fragile First Aliyah colonies alive when they would otherwise have failed — a fair reading of the record, though 'decisive' is a historical judgment rather than a single sourced fact. Equally on the record, and worth stating: his patronage was paternalistic and often resented, his administrators controlled colony life tightly, and he was initially cool toward Theodor Herzl's political Zionism, favoring practical settlement over statecraft. The real history is messier — and more human — than either the hagiography or the conspiracy version allows.

§3 · Record vs Narrative

The record is real. The “control the world” myth is not.

  • Documented philanthropy is not a secret cabal. A wealthy family that publicly financed a national project, put its name on the boulevard, and archived the paperwork is the definition of open. The conspiracy theory needs the opposite — a hidden hand — and the actual record refutes it rather than supports it.
  • Two different Rothschilds, two different threads. Edmond (French branch, settlement financing) and Walter (British branch, the Balfour letter) are distinct people doing distinct things decades apart. Collapsing them into a single omnipotent “the Rothschilds” is how history gets turned into mythology. We keep them separate.
  • The antisemitic version is a fabrication with a paper trail of its own. “The Rothschilds control the world” descends from the forged Protocols of the Elders of Zion and a century of propaganda. It is false. Naming the real, sourced history is not that myth — and pretending the real history doesn't exist only cedes the ground to the people peddling the fake one.
§4 · Why It Matters

Founding money and founding paper, on the record

States are founded by money and by paper as much as by people, and in Israel's case both carry the Rothschild name — the Baron's francs under the first colonies, and a British foreign secretary's letter to a Lord Rothschild at the diplomatic origin. That belongs in the Israeli Influence hub as foundational context: not a smoking gun, not a conspiracy, but the documented financial and diplomatic scaffolding of the state — the kind of plainly-recorded history that this site exists to state accurately, while refusing the mythology that grows in its place.

§5 · FAQ

Questions worth taking seriously

Doesn't this prove the Rothschilds control Israel or created it to rule the world?

No. It documents that one Rothschild financed early settlements and that a British pledge was addressed to another — public philanthropy and a diplomatic letter, both fully on the record. That is the opposite of a hidden hand. The “control the world” claim descends from the forged Protocols of the Elders of Zion and is false; we reject it. Documenting real, sourced history is not endorsing the myth — and treating the real history as taboo is what lets the myth spread.

Was Baron Edmond de Rothschild a Zionist?

It's more complicated than yes or no. He was a philanthropist who poured money into practical Jewish settlement from the 1880s, but he was initially wary of Theodor Herzl's political Zionism and preferred building colonies to building a state. His patronage was also paternalistic and often resented by the settlers it supported. We state that mixed record rather than flatten it in either direction.

Is it antisemitic to write about this at all?

No — documenting a family's well-attested, self-celebrated historical role (they run a foundation and a public archive about it) is history, not bigotry. The antisemitism lives in the fabricated “secret control” myth, which we explicitly reject. The dividing line is evidence and framing: sourced, specific, and bounded on one side; unfalsifiable global-cabal claims on the other.
