Leslie Wexner.
The retail billionaire who made Jeffrey Epstein possible was the same man who, in the same year Epstein got his power of attorney, co-founded the private coordinating body of American Jewish billionaire philanthropy. The two stories are the same story.
Wexner is the documented source of Epstein's wealth and the load-bearing figure in his rise — and the deck grades every claim exactly where the record leaves it, laundering no reading up to fact.
The point is not that Wexner was a criminal co-conspirator. It is that the Epstein operation is unintelligible without him.
of Limited Brands stock, held in Wexner-family trusts, that Epstein oversaw the sale of as a named trustee between 1991 and 2006 — the scale of the authority a three-page power of attorney handed him.
ABC News; IRS filings; Volscho & Boyd reconstruction
In 1991, six years after a chance introduction, Wexner signed a three-page power of attorney giving Epstein plenary signatory authority over his affairs — the single most important artifact of the relationship.
Epstein was introduced to Wexner in 1985 and was his personal financial adviser within 18 months. The July 22, 1991 POA (published by the NYT in 2019, released in full in the Feb 2026 DOJ files) granted plenary authority. Wexner has claimed under oath he did not understand its scope; the document is unambiguous.
Wexner bought the 9 East 71st Street mansion for $13.2M, then transferred it to an Epstein entity in 1998 for $0 or $1 — when it was worth ~$56M. Epstein used it to abuse underage girls.
The 21,000-sq-ft Manhattan townhouse, one of the city's largest single-family residences, was deeded to a Jeffrey Epstein-controlled entity in 1998 with a $10M promissory note (released in the 2026 DOJ tranche). Per the 2019 SDNY indictment it was a primary location of the abuse. Wexner has never coherently explained the structure.
A 2026 victims' suit alleges ~$200M in Wexner-to-Epstein transfers; a $46M Epstein-to-YLK transfer in January 2008 preceded Epstein's first arrest; and Wexner never filed a criminal complaint.
Wexner has publicly said Epstein 'appropriated' ~$100M; there is no record of any criminal complaint or civil recovery action. The 2008 transaction reads, on the surviving primary evidence, less like a fraud discovery and more like a private settlement between two parties with mutual reasons to keep the ledger closed.
Wexner's 2019–2020 claim that Epstein 'misappropriated vast sums' — the record supports a narrower reading.
The public documentary record does not support the deceit claim in full. It supports a narrower reading: that by 2006–07 the relationship became commercially inconvenient, money changed hands to close it out, and no complaint or recovery action was pursued — a pattern more consistent with a negotiated separation than a discovered fraud. Julie K. Brown and Whitney Webb have both argued this from different angles.
In 1991 — the same year as the POA — Wexner co-founded the 'Mega Group' with Charles Bronfman: a private, invitation-only body of American Jewish billionaires, undisclosed until the WSJ exposed it in 1998.
The group (self-styled the 'Study Group') met biannually; ~13 confirmed members include Edgar Bronfman Sr., Michael Steinhardt, Ronald Lauder, Laurence Tisch, Max Fisher, Lester Crown, and Steven Spielberg, growing from ~20 to as many as 50. Its existence stayed private for seven years.
Later reporting calls the Mega Group an 'informal pro-Israel lobby group'; the 1998 WSJ called it philanthropic.
Its major outputs — Birthright Israel, the Wexner Israel Fellowship at Harvard, the underwriting of Hillel International, PEJE — were directed at strengthening Israel or the American connection to it. That is a public fact. Whether it constitutes 'lobbying' in the FARA sense is a different question. The pattern on the primary record is an organized private philanthropic effort with a state-directed policy agenda — hence PROBABLY_TRUE, not FACT.
Epstein was an active Wexner Foundation trustee (1992–2007), not a passive money-mover — and he personally reviewed and approved ~$2.3M in payments to former Israeli PM Ehud Barak.
Per the 2025–26 House Oversight and DOJ releases, Epstein reviewed and approved grants and corresponded with Foundation officers. The Foundation and Abigail Wexner's YLK fund gave ~$128.4M to Israel-linked causes (2003–18). Epstein approved the Barak transfer at $100,000 per chapter; a March 2026 complaint alleges the Foundation and Barak lied to the Israeli High Court in 2020 about Epstein's involvement.
Three 1991 events — the POA, the Mega Group's founding, and Robert Maxwell's death — sit in the same year. The thesis that this reconstituted a private-blackmail apparatus is a reading of the timeline, not a finding.
The Whitney Webb thesis holds that Maxwell's death created a discontinuity in a pre-existing Israeli-adjacent apparatus, that the Mega Group provided new philanthropic cover, and that empowering Epstein was the operational reconstitution. On the public record this is not established — the three events do not individually prove coordination. We include it because the timeline is a fact and the reading is in the serious investigative literature.
Without Wexner, Epstein has no documented source of wealth, no Manhattan townhouse, and no financing for the property network. He is the load-bearing element — not a peripheral figure or a passive victim.
The Bear Stearns years (1976–81) do not produce the fortune; J. Epstein & Co. had no other publicly known clients at Wexner's scale. The Wexner relationship is the only documented income source of scale in the entire Epstein financial history; the Zorro Ranch and Little Saint James were bought when it was his only documented income. Every alternative account is speculative; the Wexner-derived wealth is documented.
Why it matters, and where it connects.
Wexner is the foundation the entire Epstein Class hub stands on: the documented money, the townhouse, the Foundation that Epstein helped administer, the Mega Group that met the same year he got the keys. It threads into Israeli Influence through the Foundation's Israel-directed work and the Barak payments — carried at the exact grade the record supports: the money and the Mega Group documented as FACT, the 'pro-Israel lobby' characterization at PROBABLY_TRUE, the 1991-convergence blackmail thesis held at SOME_SMOKE. The two stories are the same story, told without laundering the readings.
