A Navy analyst passes 800+ classified documents to Israeli handlers, draws the harshest sentence ever given for spying on behalf of a US ally, and forty years later is welcomed to Israel as the handler is pardoned and promoted.
A documented state-run operation, a decade of official denial, an admission that came only once denial stopped paying, and then parole, pardon, and promotion for the people who ran it.
The espionage and the reversal-of-consequences are FACT. That the material reached the USSR is not, and the popular 'Ginsburg dissent' is simply false.

Plus roughly 1,500 intelligence summaries, over 18 months — a volume the declassified 1987 CIA damage assessment says has few parallels among known US espionage cases. Pollard admitted it in his guilty plea.

For over a decade Israel officially called the operation a 'rogue' deviation, reversing that line only in 1998. In a 2014 interview on the Israeli program Uvda, Eitan said Israel's leadership — including Peres and Rabin — knew of and authorized the operation.
A defense secretary put the word 'treason' into a case that never charged treason, and it was decisive at sentencing.
Caspar Weinberger filed a classified 46-page declaration and a supplemental one the day before sentencing saying punishment should reflect 'the magnitude of the treason committed' — though Pollard pleaded guilty only to conspiracy to deliver defense information. Judge Robinson, who had requested the classified damage summary, imposed a life term despite a plea deal seeking only a 'substantial' sentence.
The handler indicted for running Pollard was never punished — he was pardoned by a US president and promoted to brigadier general 34 years later.
Aviem Sella was indicted in March 1987; Israel refused to extradite him and instead gave him command of a major air base. Trump pardoned him in January 2021 at Netanyahu's urging, and that September the Israeli Air Force promoted him to brigadier general with command of Tel Nof Air Base — 34 years after his US indictment.
Some of the material Pollard passed to Israel subsequently reached the Soviet Union.
Prosecutor Joseph diGenova said US intelligence suspected some material was bartered to the USSR for the emigration of Soviet Jews, and Seymour Hersh's 1999 New Yorker piece is the fullest account. But Hersh's own sources conceded no smoking-gun document exists, former CIA deputy director Robert Gates told him any Soviet access more likely came through ordinary KGB penetration of Israel, and Eitan flatly denied it. Reported and plausible — not established.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissented from the 1992 appellate ruling out of sympathy for Pollard.
The official opinion, 959 F.2d 1011, shows Judge Silberman wrote the majority affirming denial of relief and Ginsburg JOINED it. The sole dissent was Judge Stephen F. Williams. Advocacy retellings converted her presence on a three-judge panel into authorship of a sympathetic dissent she never wrote — often to imply an elite judicial sympathy the actual 2–1 vote does not support.
