A sitting federal judge's second job: defending Israel

A sitting federal judge's second job: defending Israel.
Roy Altman is a life-tenured U.S. district judge — and the author of a book acquitting Israel of genocide, a fixture on pro-Israel programs, and the organizer of judicial trips to Israel. An ethics complaint has followed.
The subject is narrow: one judge's documented, unusually public advocacy for a foreign state, and the impartiality questions it raises under the rules that govern judges. Not a claim about Jewish people; not an assertion that he rules corruptly.
We lay down the record and the standard, grade the conduct as fact, and treat the ethics-violation question as the open, filed matter it is.
A life-tenured federal judge, appointed by Trump, confirmed 66–33.
Roy Altman (b. Venezuela, 1982) was nominated to the Southern District of Florida by Trump and confirmed 66–33 in 2019 — then the youngest U.S. district judge. Notable rulings: dismissed a transgender teen's challenge to Florida's sports ban; in 2026 halted an order requiring Trump to give financial data to the BBC in Trump's libel suit. Noted as context for the impartiality question, not proof of bias.
He wrote a book acquitting Israel of genocide — and campaigns for it, sometimes from his office.
Israel on Trial (Simon & Schuster, 2026) applies 'courtroom-tested standards' to — and rejects — the genocide/apartheid/colonialism claims. He promoted it at AEI (on C-SPAN's Book TV) and across pro-Israel/right-wing programs; Zeteo reports repeated live broadcasts from his court office, and that he called the keffiyeh a 'terrorism scarf.' A sitting judge taking a public side on the most litigated question in international law is the crux.
He organized junkets that took a large share of the judiciary to Israel — and says so.
Altman helped organize and lead World Jewish Congress–facilitated delegations of U.S. federal judges to Israel (documented by the SDFLA legal press and Ynet), described himself as an organizer, and bragged on X about taking '10% of the federal judicial branch' on trips over three years and helping colleagues 'see the situation in Israel and Gaza the way he does.' He also keynoted the 2025 CUFI event. The scale and his stated aim of shaping colleagues' views are what make it notable.
His disclosures show fees and gifts from pro-Israel groups — and past defense-stock holdings.
Per his federal financial-disclosure reports (reviewed by Zeteo): speaker fees and gifts from the World Jewish Congress, the World Jewish Conference, CUFI, and AEI, plus past holdings in Raytheon, Caterpillar, and Lockheed Martin. Disclosures are public record; contents = FACT, compilation attributed to Zeteo. We do NOT assert these influenced any ruling — the point is the appearance of interest the recusal rules exist to manage.
An ethics complaint has been filed — and the code is specific.
In August 2026 a Florida attorney filed a complaint with the U.S. Court of Appeals accusing Altman of violating judicial-ethics rules. The Code of Conduct for U.S. Judges tells judges to avoid political activity, refrain from conduct reflecting adversely on impartiality, and disqualify themselves where their impartiality 'might reasonably be questioned.' Whether his advocacy, trips, and gifts cross those lines is exactly what the complaint asks — filed, serious, and unadjudicated. Complaint's existence + the code's text = FACT; the violation itself = SOME SMOKE, attributed.
How this page is graded.
- FACT: the confirmation and rulings; the book and its AEI/pro-Israel promotion; the WJC judge-trips he organized and the CUFI keynote; the disclosure contents; his own on-record statements (the '10%' boast, 'terrorism scarf,' 'to be American is to be a Zionist').
- SOME SMOKE / attributed: whether the conduct violates judicial ethics or compromised any ruling — a complaint is filed and unadjudicated.
- NOT asserted: a claim about Jewish people; that Israel 'controls' the courts; that he ruled corruptly. Zeteo's 'Israeli spokesperson' line is attributed, not adopted.
Why it matters.
A federal judgeship is the one office built entirely around the appearance of impartiality — the robe, the recusal rules, the bar on political activity all exist so litigants trust the person deciding their case. Open, funded, publicized advocacy for a foreign government is in obvious tension with that, whatever one thinks of Israel. It belongs in Israeli Influence not because a judge holds views, but because the persuasion-and-funding machinery this hub documents reaches even the bench — alongside the surveillance-tech founder urging the state to police speech.
