We don't recount the hundreds of names here — others do that, carefully, and we link them. What this page does is state what the press-freedom record establishes, grade it, and separate the broad, undisputed death toll from the sharper, disputed claim that Israel has deliberately targeted journalists.

Since October 7, 2023, more journalists have been killed in Israel's war in Gaza than in any conflict the modern press-freedom organizations have ever tracked. The exact number depends on who is counting and when — the monitors use different definitions of “journalist” and different cut-off dates — but every one of them puts this war at the top of the list.
The Costs of War Project at Brown University called it “the single deadliest conflict for journalists in all known conflicts in the history of the world.” The disputed question is not whether journalists are dying in enormous numbers — that is documented — but whether they are being deliberately targeted. Press-freedom groups say yes in specific, investigated cases; Israel denies targeting journalists. This page holds those two claims apart and grades each.
The numbers differ — the conclusion doesn't
The counts diverge because the organizations count differently (who qualifies as a journalist or media worker, whether a death is confirmed, the reporting date). We show the range rather than pick one number. All figures are as reported through mid-to-late 2025; the toll has continued to climb.

FACTCPJ (~192), IFJ (~180+), the UN (242), and the Gaza Government Media Office (217+) report different totals because they define 'journalist,' confirm deaths, and cut off their counts differently. This is a feature of honest tallying, not a contradiction — every source still ranks this war first. Any figure we publish carries its attribution and date.
Where the record stops
- Killed vs. deliberately targeted are two claims. The mass death toll is documented and effectively undisputed. That a given journalist was intentionally targeted is a case-by-case finding — strong in some (CPJ/RSF investigations), not established for every death. Keep them apart.
- Israel's position is stated, not buried. Israel denies deliberately targeting journalists and has, in specific instances, asserted that individuals it killed were militants or “Hamas-affiliated.” Press-freedom groups have contested those claims. A fair page carries both and grades the evidence.
- The number is a range, not a headline figure. Anyone citing a single total without its source and date is overstating precision. The defensible statement is comparative: the deadliest on record.
When the witnesses die, the record dies with them

Isn't 'deliberately targeted' just an accusation?
In specific cases it is a documented finding by CPJ and RSF, not a bare accusation. We grade it PROBABLY TRUE for those investigated cases, state Israel's denial, and do not extend it to every death in the toll.
