On October 2, 2018, the Washington Post columnist and Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by a team of Saudi officials. Riyadh first denied it, then called it a “rogue” operation; a Saudi court later convicted eight people. In February 2021 the US government declassified its intelligence assessment: the Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, approved the operation.

An assessment is not a verdict — and a denial is not a rebuttal
- What the US government concluded is documented. The ODNI assessment is a declassified, public intelligence judgment. It is not a court verdict against MBS, and we don't call it one — but it is the considered conclusion of the US intelligence community, and it is unambiguous about who approved the operation.
- The denial doesn't engage the evidence. “He knew nothing” and “things happen” are assertions, not counter-evidence. Neither the Saudi government nor the president has produced a factual rebuttal of the assessment's reasoning; they have simply contradicted its conclusion.
- Follow the money for the motive to look away. The reversal is not free-floating.
