The fraud they warn about barely exists — even Heritage's own count finds ~1,500 cases across decades. So follow what's actually being done to the vote: the restriction, the money, and a convicted election-site hacker who appears to work inside the office that enforces voting rights.
The 'voter fraud' emergency is built on a near-nonexistent crime — and the loudest alarms come from the side now assembling an election-control apparatus, whose own supporters keep supplying the rare real cases.
Every piece is graded on its own evidence. 'The real voter fraud' is editorial framing, not a grade. The unconfirmed and unadjudicated pieces — the DOJ hire, whether Musk broke the law — are posed, never asserted.
Voter fraud is extremely rare — and the cleanest proof is that even a conservative org hunting for it finds almost none.
In-person impersonation runs to 31 credible cases in ~1 billion ballots (Levitt/WaPo); the studied fraud rate is 0.0003%–0.0025% (Brennan); a five-year Bush-era DOJ dragnet produced 86 convictions nationally, mostly honest mistakes; Georgia's own audit caught every one of 1,634 noncitizen registration attempts over 25 years, none able to vote. Above all, the Heritage Foundation's own fraud database holds only ~1,500 cases of ALL types across decades. By their own criteria.
When the rare real case of individual fraud is prosecuted, it keeps being a Trump supporter.
Bruce Bartman voted his dead mother's ballot for Trump; Kirk Hartle starred in a GOP ad about a stolen dead-spouse vote he had cast himself; Ralph Thurman voted twice in a disguise; Ohio trustee Edward Snodgrass forged his dead father's ballot. All pleaded guilty. Not proof of mass Republican fraud — fraud is rare on all sides — but a documented hypocrisy of proportion: the loudest alarm-sounders keep supplying the culprits.
Elon Musk's America PAC dangled $1 million a day to swing-state voters in 2024 — and DOJ warned in writing it 'may violate' federal law.
In October 2024 America PAC offered $1M a day to registered swing-state voters who signed its petition; DOJ's Election Crimes Branch warned it 'may violate' 52 U.S.C. §10307(c), and the PAC's own lawyer told a court the 'random' winners 'are not chosen by chance.' No charge was filed and experts split on whether the statute reaches a payment nominally to sign a petition — so 'broke the law' is posed, not asserted. The facts are FACT; the crime is unadjudicated.
A lawyer who pleaded guilty to hacking a Florida elections office now appears — on photos DOJ won't confirm — to work inside the office that enforces voting rights.
David Michael Levin's 2016 SQL-injection hack of the Lee County elections site and his guilty plea (three felonies reduced to two misdemeanors) are court record — FACT. That he has since joined DOJ's Civil Rights Division is the load-bearing claim and it is UNCONFIRMED: the originating report is headlined 'appears to have hired' and DOJ declined to confirm his employment. Posed, not asserted — set against a documented election-control push (proof-of-citizenship gates and mail limits partially enjoined, ~1,000 poll monitors, a non-denial on federal agents at polls).
Against that near-zero threat, a decades-long campaign has steadily made voting harder — and where a court examined one law's intent, it found deliberate targeting.
A dated, primary-sourced timeline: Crawford (2008) upheld the first strict photo-ID law on a record with zero impersonation cases; Shelby County (2013) gutted Voting Rights Act preclearance and previously-blocked laws took effect within hours; the Fourth Circuit struck North Carolina's HB 589 for targeting Black voters 'with almost surgical precision'; Husted (2018) blessed aggressive roll purges; Florida's SB 7066 (2019) conditioned rights-restoration on paying fines and fees; and Georgia's SB 202 and Texas's SB 1 (2021) rewrote how ballots are cast amid the most restrictive year on record (Brennan Center: 34 laws, 19 states). We grade the measures and reserve the intent claim for where a court found it.
