The Replacement Machine.
Someone paid to push the Great Replacement conspiracy into more than half a billion screens across 30 countries — and swapped the villain. Where the far right blames George Soros, this campaign blamed Qatar. The ads are documented down to Meta's own data. The buyer is still anonymous.
A covert paid-ad operation (exposed by Marc Owen Jones — the disinformation researcher, NOT the Guardian columnist — and Sohan Dsouza; 'The Qatar Plot,' Jul 2024, expanded as 'Manufacturing the Great Replacement,' Oct 2026) ran the Great Replacement conspiracy as a product at industrial scale, casting QATAR in the hidden-financier role antisemitic versions assign to George Soros. 533M recorded exposures / 30 countries / 37 months; Meta itself disrupted it and ranked it among the largest covert ops it had ever removed, alongside state actors. The op is FACT; who produced it and who paid are two different questions graded separately.
GRADING. FACT (op): 533M exposures (831M projected), 30 countries, Oct 2023–Aug 2026, 72 named campaigns across 64 FB page identities, $1.2M Meta ad spend (Meta-confirmed); Meta Q2-2024 Adversarial Threat Report disrupted it + ranked w/ state actors; laundered via Vietnam/'LT Media'; Meta did NOT name the actor (use the EXPANDED 2026 numbers — original Jul-2024 ed. ~41M Meta reach; don't mix). FACT (content): Great Replacement w/ Qatar-as-Soros; 'Invade, Influence, Islamicize'; astroturf brands (Qonspiracy, Doha Dirt, The Rotten Emir); boycott PSG/Harrods/Qatar Airways; Sheikha Moza + ICRC targeted; AI 'krakens.' FACT (Lebanon): blame Iran/Hezbollah, 'Israel conspicuously absent.' PROBABLY TRUE: PRODUCTION in Israel (Hebrew labels; Sun–Thu/UTC+3 + Israeli-DST clock change; Israeli IP in a campaign-linked Wikipedia edit; Israeli video-creator name in metadata; material via Johnnie Moore/JDA Worldwide) — researchers: 'points to production in Israel' (production != sponsorship). SOME SMOKE/posed: WHO COMMISSIONED/FUNDED — 'ultimate sponsor remains unknown.' Carry the Haaretz (Sep 2026) Israeli anti-Qatar cell (FACT it existed; NOT proven the operator; no firm named — don't supply one); STOIC = a SEPARATE Diaspora-Affairs-funded Israeli op (don't conflate); UAE = unverified self-published. HARD DUAL-STANCE: this is scrutiny of an OP, not the 'Israel controls the media' canard; the Great Replacement is a racist/antisemitic canard regardless of target; Qatar's conduct not the subject/not endorsed.
A covert propaganda op reached 500M+ screens — and Meta itself took it down.
Corroborated by the platform that hosted it. Expanded Oct 2026 accounting: 533M recorded exposures (831M projected) across 30 countries over 37 months, as 72 named campaigns across 64 Facebook page identities, plus YouTube/TikTok/X. Meta's Q2 2024 Adversarial Threat Report disrupted the network, confirmed $1.2M+ in Meta-ad spend, and ranked it among the largest covert influence ops it had ever removed — explicitly alongside state-actor campaigns. Meta traced payments through a Vietnamese proxy ('LT Media') it judged a cut-out, and did NOT name who was behind it.
It ran the Great Replacement — with Qatar slotted into the role antisemites give Soros.
The ads pushed the Great Replacement theory (white Europeans 'deliberately replaced' by Muslim immigrants) and cast Qatar as the hidden hand financing it — the exact structural role the antisemitic version gives George Soros. Slogan: 'Invade, Influence, Islamicize.' Dozens of fake grassroots brands (Qonspiracy, Qatarsis, Doha Dirt, The Rotten Emir, Made in Qatar) simulated organic outrage; boycott drives hit PSG, Harrods, Qatar Airways; the op targeted Sheikha Moza (mother of Qatar's Emir) and the ICRC president, and deployed AI-generated Qatari 'krakens' attacking the EU.
In Lebanon, the same op ran a conveniently selective war narrative.
A parallel Lebanon track (accounts like 'No to the Iranian Occupation,' 'Shia Against the War') blamed Iran and Hezbollah for the war and for dragging Lebanon in — defensible on its own — but, as the investigation notes, 'Israel was conspicuously absent' from the story the ads told. The campaign also astroturfed support for a new Shia party positioned against Hezbollah and Amal. The existence and content of the Lebanon track = FACT; what it reveals about the op's interests feeds the attribution question.
The forensic fingerprints point to the content being PRODUCED in Israel.
The strongest attribution evidence — about production, not payment. The researchers found: Hebrew-language labels; a Sunday–Thursday posting pattern (Israeli work week) with a computer-clock change matching the end of Israeli daylight saving (UTC+3); an Israeli IP exposed in a campaign-linked Wikipedia edit; a name in video metadata matching an Israeli political-video creator; and material routed through Johnnie Moore (US evangelical Trump adviser, head of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation) with a lead pointing to PR firm JDA Worldwide. Their conclusion: 'this evidence points to production in Israel.' PROBABLY TRUE. FENCE (theirs): production location != the identity of the paying client.
A real, separately-reported Israeli anti-Qatar op existed at the same moment — but isn't proven to be this one.
Haaretz (Sep 2026): ~30 Israeli influence experts and advisers — incl. psy-war specialists and a former Mossad official — formed a cell within days of Oct 7, 2023 to pressure Qatar into pushing Hamas to free the 251 hostages; produced videos + a multilingual web presence ('Hamas is ISIS,' 'Qatar-ISIS Ltd'), then abruptly shut it down ~a month later with no explanation, scrubbing traces. That cell is independently documented FACT. Timing is striking: the ad op's Sheikha-Moza hostage-pressure phase ran in the same window. Marc Owen Jones says it 'sounds exactly like' the op he tracked. But resemblance + timing != identity: Haaretz named no firm, and no one has shown this cell ran the paid-ad machine. SOME SMOKE, posed.
Who commissioned and financed it: unresolved — and we won't pretend otherwise.
The investigators are explicit: 'the ultimate sponsor of the operation remains unknown' / 'who ultimately commissioned and financed the operation remains unresolved.' Production fingerprints point to Israel; the beneficiary of making Qatar toxic while it mediated Hamas–Israel is a matter of interests, not proof; a documented Israeli anti-Qatar cell existed in the same window. Two threads carried WITHOUT conflating: STOIC — a SEPARATE Israeli firm hired by Israel's Ministry of Diaspora Affairs (~$2M) — ran overlapping Islamophobic messaging but isn't shown to be this operator; and a self-published UAE-did-it claim (Qatar's chief rival) is unverified/non-authoritative. SOME SMOKE: serious, Israel-leaning indicators, no established funder. Name what points where; crown no one.
The line we hold.
- FACT: 533M recorded exposures (831M projected) / 30 countries / Oct 2023–Aug 2026 / 72 campaigns / 64 FB page identities / $1.2M Meta spend (Meta-confirmed). Meta disrupted it + ranked it w/ state-actor campaigns; laundered via Vietnam/'LT Media'; Meta didn't name the actor.
- FACT: Great Replacement structure w/ Qatar in the Soros slot; 'Invade, Influence, Islamicize'; astroturf brands; PSG/Harrods/Qatar Airways boycotts; Sheikha Moza + ICRC targeted; AI 'krakens.' Lebanon track blamed Iran/Hezbollah, 'Israel conspicuously absent.'
- PROBABLY TRUE: PRODUCED in Israel — Hebrew labels, Sun–Thu/UTC+3 + Israeli-DST clock, Israeli IP in a Wikipedia edit, Israeli video-creator name, Johnnie Moore/JDA Worldwide conduit. Researchers: 'points to production in Israel.' Production != sponsorship.
- SOME SMOKE / POSED: WHO PAID — 'ultimate sponsor remains unknown.' The Haaretz Israeli anti-Qatar cell (ex-Mossad + ~30 operatives, same window, same goal) is FACT it existed but NOT proven the operator (no firm named — we supply none). STOIC = a SEPARATE Diaspora-Affairs-funded op (don't conflate). UAE = unverified self-published.
- HARD DUAL-STANCE FENCE: scrutiny of a Meta-removed OP whose fingerprints point one way is NOT the 'Israel/Jews control the media' canard (named + refused) — we'd say it of Russia/UAE/US alike. The Great Replacement is a racist/antisemitic canard regardless of target; here it was rebuilt with Qatar in the Jewish-financier chair. Qatar's own conduct is not the subject and not endorsed. (Researcher = Marc Owen Jones, not the Guardian columnist.)
Why it matters.
The frightening thing isn't that a conspiracy theory exists — it's that it can be BOUGHT, at scale, like any ad product. The same targeting infrastructure built to sell sneakers retailed the Great Replacement to half a billion screens, segmented by country, tuned by engagement, laundered through a Vietnamese shell, billed to an account no one has traced. That's the modern influence industry: hatred has a rate card. A buyer with a strategic grudge and a seven-figure budget can rent the most dangerous idea in European politics, aim it at whatever target serves the week's interest, and — routed carefully — never sign their name. The careful version of this story keeps two questions apart: who produced the content (fingerprints point to Israel — probably true) and who paid (unresolved, by the investigators' own words). A piece that flattens those into one conviction trades the thing that makes it credible for the thing that makes it shareable. And the bitter symmetry: the Great Replacement is, classically, an antisemitic conspiracy casting a Jewish financier as puppet-master of white decline — here rebuilt with Qatar in that chair. The machinery of the oldest lie doesn't care who it's aimed at. It needs a villain and a budget.
Help us fill these lines.
- OpenThe paying client: the single missing receipt. Meta ranked it with state actors but named no one; the researchers say the ultimate sponsor is unresolved. Who signed the checks is the whole ballgame.
- OpenWhether the Haaretz-documented Israeli cell (or STOIC, or any named firm) is actually the operator — the step from 'matching Israeli op existed' and 'produced in Israel' to 'this entity ran it.'
- OpenThe platforms' disclosure gap: why Meta can rank an op among its largest-ever covert takedowns and still not tell the public who paid — and what an enforced funder-disclosure regime would have surfaced here.
