Do the objections to solar and wind hold up?
Some do, partly; some don't at all. Bundled, they sound damning. Sorted and sourced, they split into real engineering problems being solved and talking points that don't survive the record.

§2 · Thesis
The move to watch: take a real, solvable engineering challenge, delete the fact that it's being solved, and sell it as proof the whole thing is doomed.

§5 · Graded Claim
The fuel is free and inexhaustible; 'they're not 24/7' is a strawman — nobody claims a panel makes power at midnight. You capture the free energy when it's abundant and store it.
FACT
Sunlight and wind cost nothing, never run out, and carry no fuel-price swings — marginal fuel cost ~zero. Storage exists at scale (record ~52 GW U.S., record-low prices) plus transmission and flexible demand; variability adds real cost, but 'not 24/7 therefore unserious' refutes a claim no one makes.
§5 · Graded Claim
Renewables did NOT cause the 2021 Texas blackout: federal investigators found natural gas was the largest category of failed generation.
FACT
The FERC/NERC joint inquiry (Nov 2021) found the freeze knocked out all fuel types; gas (frozen wellheads/pipelines) was the biggest share. Wind underperformed roughly as winter planning assumed. Lesson: winterize all sources.

Turbines kill birds — but a fraction of what cats (billions/yr) and buildings (hundreds of millions/yr) do; turbines are in the hundreds of thousands.
FACT
Real at a badly-sited project; collapses as a case against wind on the numbers (Loss, Will & Marra 2013; USFWS). And climate change is itself a leading long-term threat to birds — the fossil status quo is the bigger danger.

Wind and solar use land lightly: the ground between turbines stays farmable, and solar at national scale needs only a few percent of land.
FACT
A turbine's footprint is a small fraction of the project area; solar can be marginal land, rooftops, or dual-use (agrivoltaics). 'They pave the countryside' is a picture, not the measured land use.

Clean energy does need mined materials — a real supply-chain concern, but far below the billions of tonnes of fossil fuels extracted yearly, and the minerals can be recycled.

The objection with the most substance: mining has real environmental/geopolitical costs concentrated in a few countries. It's a matter of scale and management, not a disqualifier. Graded PROBABLY TRUE pending pinned supply-chain/recycling figures.

Keep (real engineering)
- Intermittency → storage, transmission, diversity.
- Materials/supply chains → manage and recycle.
- Siting and end-of-life recycling → do the work.
Retire (contradicted)
- 'Wind froze Texas' — gas was the bigger failure.
- 'Turbines slaughter birds' — a fraction of cats/buildings.
- 'They pave the countryside' — small, dual-use footprint.
Declassified
The strongest objection is a cost question, not a veto: firming a variable grid adds cost — but storage costs keep falling.
§7 · Why it matters now
Real problems, weaponized as vetoes.
