Anniston, Alabama: a $700 million PCB poisoning settlement (2003).
FACT
Monsanto made PCBs at Anniston for decades and discharged them into the town. In 2003 Monsanto + Solutia (with Pharmacia) settled with 20,000+ residents for $700M (Tolbert v. Monsanto; Abernathy v. Monsanto). The 'they knew and hid it' account rests on the litigation record — attributed, not asserted as our finding.

Indonesia: a $50,000 bribe, charged by the DOJ under the FCPA (2005).
FACT
DOJ charged Monsanto under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act for a $50,000 payment to a senior Indonesian environment official — booked as 'consultant fees' — to bypass the environmental-impact study required before cultivating GM cotton. Resolved by deferred prosecution agreement; SEC found further payments; ~$1.5M total. A documented federal charge.

Agent Orange: a principal manufacturer of the dioxin-laced defoliant, and the Nitro, WV settlement.
FACT
Monsanto was a major Agent Orange manufacturer; its Nitro, WV plant produced chemicals in that chain, and in 2012 it settled the Nitro dioxin case (a medical-monitoring class action reported ~$93M). The manufacture and the settlement are established; the science linking dioxin to specific individuals' illnesses is contested/litigated — not asserted here.

Why it matters.
When Bayer paid $63B for Monsanto and retired the brand, it bought one of the ugliest liability histories in American industry — a poisoned town, a foreign bribe, a war chemical. Renaming it doesn't erase the record; it just makes it harder to find. The same firms that now own the seed and the chemicals carry this history, and the settle-and-move-on pattern is why so little of it ever reached a verdict — the Too Big to Jail story.
