Its effects are not, because the systems it acts on respond in steps, not smooth lines: the ocean has taken up most of the extra heat and grown measurably more acidic, coral is in its fourth global bleaching event, ice sheets are shrinking, and species are on the move. One degree isn't small where it lands
The instinct that “one degree” is nothing is reasonable and wrong. The number is a global average; the systems it acts on respond in thresholds. Corals bleach past a temperature line. Ice melts past a freezing line. A small average shift moves the whole distribution, turning once-rare extremes into regular ones. That is why a change that sounds negligible shows up as a fourth global bleaching event and record ocean heat.
The record, claim by claim
The planet has warmed about 1 degree Celsius since the late 1800s, at roughly ten times the speed of a natural post-ice-age warming.
FACTNASA puts the rise in average surface temperature at about 1 degree Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) since the late 19th century, with most of it in the last several decades and the warmest years all recent. Paleoclimate evidence shows the current warming is proceeding about ten times faster than the average warming that follows an ice age. The IPCC's assessment is blunt: human influence on the climate has moved 'from theory to established fact.'
The ocean has absorbed about 90% of the extra heat, and its upper layer has measurably warmed.
FACTRoughly 90 percent of the extra energy trapped by greenhouse gases has gone into the ocean, not the air — which is why air-temperature figures understate the total heat added to the system. NASA reports the top 100 meters of ocean warmed about 0.33 degrees Celsius since 1969, and global ocean heat content has been setting records. A warmer ocean expands (raising sea level), holds less oxygen, and drives stronger marine heatwaves.
The surface ocean is about 30% more acidic than before the industrial revolution.
FACTAs the ocean absorbs CO2, it forms carbonic acid and its pH falls. NOAA reports that the pH of surface ocean water has dropped by 0.1 units since the industrial revolution began — and because the pH scale is logarithmic, that is about a 30 percent increase in acidity. This is a basic, pole-to-pole change in ocean chemistry, and it makes it harder for corals, oysters, and other shell-builders to form and keep their shells.

FACTOn April 15, 2024, NOAA, with the International Coral Reef Initiative, confirmed the fourth global coral bleaching event on record — the second in a decade. From early 2023 into 2025, bleaching-level heat stress affected roughly 84 percent of the world's coral reef area, across all three reef-bearing ocean basins, with mass bleaching documented in more than 80 countries and territories. The escalation is steep: past global events hit about 21% of reefs (1998), 37% (2010), and 68% (2014–2017).
Ice sheets are losing mass and seas are rising: the planet's ice is in measured retreat.
FACTThe Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are losing mass, mountain glaciers are retreating, and Arctic sea ice is declining in extent and thickness. That lost ice, together with the thermal expansion of a warming ocean, has raised global sea level and continues to. NASA tracks all of these as part of the same picture of a warming system, measured by satellites and instruments rather than inferred.
Species are already shifting their ranges and timing, and the first climate-driven extinctions have been recorded.
FACTThis is not only about physical systems. The IPCC's Sixth Assessment (Working Group II) finds that climate change has already caused widespread impacts on nature: many land and ocean species have shifted their ranges toward the poles and to higher elevations, seasonal timing (flowering, breeding, migration) has moved, and some local populations and species have been lost, including the first mammal extinction attributed to climate change. These are observed changes across thousands of species, not projections.

Where the evidence is strong, and where it stops
- Observed, not forecast. Everything graded FACT here has already been measured — ocean heat and chemistry, coral bleaching, ice loss, species movement. This page deliberately stays on the observed side of the line and leaves projections to their own section.
- Single events are the wrong unit. We do not say a given hurricane or wildfire was “caused by” warming. Attribution science speaks in probabilities and trends: warming has made certain classes of extreme — heatwaves, heavy rain — more likely and more intense in many regions. That is a different, more careful claim than blaming one storm.
- “Stressed” is not “collapsed.” Documented stress is not the same as ecosystem collapse or a crossed tipping point. Those are real risks with genuine uncertainty, and inflating a measured stress into an announced catastrophe is the mirror image of denying it. We grade what is measured.
- “Only one degree” misleads. The phrase is technically true and deeply misleading, because the effects are threshold-driven. Corals and ice do not care about the global average; they cross their own lines. That is why a small average change produces large measured effects.

Not for a single event, and we don't. Attribution science works in probabilities: warming has made some classes of extreme — heatwaves, heavy rainfall — more frequent and intense in many regions. Saying “this made that class of event more likely” is defensible; saying “climate caused this one storm” is not, and we keep them apart.
Aren't these claims just alarmism?
The opposite of alarmism is what's on this page: measured, sourced, and bounded. Alarmism inflates; denial dismisses; we're doing neither, just reading the record.
