Barak, Carbyne, and the money that outlived Jeffrey Epstein by seven years.
A former Israeli Prime Minister took research funding tied to Epstein in 2004, visited his properties for a decade, and built an investment vehicle with him in 2014 that became a 911-dispatch surveillance company. Founders Fund backed it in 2018. Andreessen Horowitz followed in 2021 and 2022. Axon bought it for $625 million in 2025 and closed the deal in February 2026.
Ehud Barak chaired Carbyne, originally named Reporty Homeland Security. Epstein's Southern Trust Company put money into the company through a partnership called Sum (E.B.) 2015, which held all of Carbyne's Series A preferred stock. DOJ document releases from 2025 and 2026, including an FBI FD-1023 record (EFTA00090314) naming Barak alongside Alan Dershowitz, moved this story from Israeli-press sourcing to primary-document confirmation.
Primary sources include the New York Times reporting on the Wexner Foundation payments to Barak, the Times' separate reporting on Epstein's tech investments, the Daily Beast on Barak's photographed visits, Reuters on Founders Fund's 2018 investment, and Forbes on the Axon sale.
What this page is about
Ehud Barak received research funding connected to Jeffrey Epstein starting in 2004, through the Wexner Foundation, where Epstein sat as a trustee. That relationship continued for over a decade. In December 2014, the two men negotiated an investment in Reporty Homeland Security, an Israeli 911-dispatch startup that later renamed itself Carbyne. Epstein's Southern Trust Company invested through a partnership called Sum (E.B.) 2015. Barak became chairman.
Carbyne's first outside institutional investor, in 2018, was Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, its first Israeli portfolio company. Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) joined as a participant investor later, in the 2021 Series B and 2022 Series C rounds, alongside CRV, Y Combinator, and former CIA director David Petraeus as an individual investor. Axon announced its acquisition of Carbyne for $625 million in November 2025 and closed the deal in February 2026.
DOJ document releases across 2025 and 2026 turned this from an Israeli-press story into one confirmed by primary documents, including a December 2014 email from Barak to Epstein and an FBI FD-1023 confidential-source report (EFTA00090314) that names Barak alongside Alan Dershowitz.
The foundational reporting is Haaretz's July 2019 break on the Sum (E.B.) 2015 structure, confirmed by Barak himself to the Times of Israel days later. The New York Times, Daily Beast, and Calcalist added the Wexner Foundation history, the photographed visits, and the corporate mechanics respectively. The 2025-2026 DOJ document tranches, reported by the Miami Herald, Forbes, USA Today, and Al Jazeera, supply the primary emails and the FD-1023 record. Where a claim rests on the DOJ-released documents themselves, it is graded FACT. Where it characterizes the relationship without a document stating it outright, it is graded PROBABLY TRUE.
We are not saying Founders Fund or Andreessen Horowitz knew about Epstein's role in Carbyne's cap table when they invested. Founders Fund entered in 2018, three years after Sum (E.B.) 2015 was formed and after Epstein's 2015 conviction-era notoriety had already receded from mainstream coverage. Neither firm has been shown to have had that knowledge.
We are not saying Barak knew the specifics of Epstein's sex-trafficking conduct when he entered the Carbyne investment or continued the broader business correspondence. What is documented is the financial and personal relationship, not Barak's knowledge of Epstein's crimes.
We are not saying the FBI FD-1023 record (EFTA00090314) proves the underlying allegations it relays. FD-1023 forms document what a confidential human source told the FBI. The document's existence and its naming of Barak and Dershowitz are facts. The truth of the source's underlying claims is a separate, unresolved question.
Epstein’s money and Barak’s access built a surveillance company that outlived the scandal by seven years.
Most coverage of Epstein's finances treats his Israeli-tech investments as a footnote to the sex-trafficking case. This page treats Carbyne as the clearest example of something else: a personal relationship that produced a durable business asset, one that changed hands among mainstream US venture firms for years after Epstein's 2019 death, and sold for $625 million in 2025 without his estate holding a stake at all.
Three separate tracks converge in this story. The first is personal: a decade of Barak-Epstein correspondence and visits, starting with Wexner Foundation research payments in 2004. The second is financial and structural: the December 2014 negotiation, the Sum (E.B.) 2015 partnership, and the venture rounds that followed after Epstein exited. The third is the record itself: what Israeli press established by 2019, and what DOJ document releases in 2025 and 2026, including an FD-1023 naming Barak next to Dershowitz, later confirmed with primary paper.
The correction that matters most for accuracy: Founders Fund, not Andreessen Horowitz, was the 2018 outside investor that took Carbyne from an Epstein-linked seed vehicle into mainstream Silicon Valley territory. a16z's money came later, in 2021 and 2022, well after Epstein's death and after the company had already rebranded from Reporty to Carbyne.

Who took the money, who chaired the company, and who invested after Epstein was gone.
Former Prime Minister of Israel (1999-2001), former Defense Minister, former IDF Chief of Staff. Took Wexner Foundation research payments connected to Epstein starting in 2004, corresponded with Epstein for over a decade, and chaired the company that became Carbyne after negotiating the investment with Epstein in December 2014. Sold his Carbyne shares before the 2025 Axon sale.
Signed Wexner Foundation transfer forms to Barak in 2004-2006 as a foundation trustee. Negotiated the Reporty investment with Barak by email in December 2014. His attorney worked to keep the investment undisclosed. Died in federal custody in August 2019, four years after the Sum (E.B.) 2015 partnership was formed.
Invested roughly $500,000 alongside Epstein in the same 2015 partnership structure that held Carbyne's Series A preferred stock.
Worked to keep the Reporty/Carbyne investment undisclosed, according to DOJ-released estate documents reported by the Miami Herald in March 2026.
Founders Fund invested in Carbyne in August 2018, its first Israeli portfolio company. This is a separate Thiel vehicle from Valar Ventures, which took $40 million from Epstein directly in 2015-2016 and had earlier rejected a Reporty pitch as premature.
Joined later than Founders Fund, not at the 2018 entry point. Invested alongside CRV, Y Combinator, and individual investor David Petraeus. Do not conflate a16z's later participation with Founders Fund's original 2018 investment.
Former CIA director. Invested in Carbyne as an individual in the same later rounds that included a16z, CRV, and Y Combinator.
Announced the $625 million acquisition of Carbyne in November 2025 and closed the deal in February 2026, folding Carbyne's platform into a new Axon 911 product line.
Ten claims spanning 2004 to 2026, each graded, each cited to a primary or named source.
The Wexner Foundation paid Barak roughly $2.3 million for research between 2004 and 2006, with Epstein signing some transfer forms as a foundation trustee.
FACTDocumented in New York Times reporting drawing on Wexner Foundation records and named sources. This predates the Carbyne investment by a decade and establishes the origin of the financial relationship.
Barak and Epstein negotiated the Reporty (later Carbyne) investment by email in December 2014, and Epstein's attorney worked to keep it undisclosed.
FACTConfirmed by DOJ-released estate documents, including Barak's own email language about being 'ripe for decision.' This moved the claim from press sourcing to primary-document confirmation in 2026.
Epstein's Southern Trust Company invested through the Sum (E.B.) 2015 partnership, which held all of Reporty/Carbyne's Series A preferred stock; Nicole Junkermann invested roughly $500,000 alongside him.
FACTReported with corporate-structure detail by Calcalist's technology desk and independently confirmed by Haaretz's original break and Barak's own public acknowledgment.
Barak chaired Reporty/Carbyne after the 2015 investment closed.
FACTBarak confirmed the Sum (E.B.) 2015 partnership and his role publicly to the Times of Israel in July 2019, after Haaretz's original report.
Ehud Barak visited Epstein's Manhattan residence multiple times, documented in photographs, and acknowledged the visits on the record.
FACTThe Daily Beast verified the photographs and published Barak's on-record acknowledgment in July 2019.
Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, not Andreessen Horowitz, was Carbyne's first outside institutional investor, entering in August 2018 as the fund's first Israeli portfolio company.
FACTReuters reported the 2018 investment at the time. Andreessen Horowitz's participation came later, in the 2021 Series B and 2022 Series C. Conflating the two firms or their entry dates is a factual error this page corrects.
Barak's post-2015 correspondence with Epstein and his staff reflects an ongoing operational relationship, not casual contact.
PROBABLY TRUEUSA Today's review of emails from 2005 to 2017 shows Barak relaying messages to Larry Summers and Alan Dershowitz through Epstein, and his wife coordinating property stays directly with Epstein's staff. The volume of correspondence supports an operational characterization strongly, but no single document states 'operational relationship' outright; that is this page's characterization of the pattern, not a quoted description.
Andreessen Horowitz participated in Carbyne's 2021 Series B and 2022 Series C, alongside CRV, Y Combinator, and individual investor David Petraeus.
FACTDocumented in funding-round data. This is a real position, but a secondary and later one relative to Founders Fund's 2018 entry, and it postdates Epstein's 2019 death.
A January 2026 DOJ document release included an unclassified FBI FD-1023 confidential-human-source report, EFTA00090314, naming Ehud Barak alongside Alan Dershowitz.
FACTThe document itself exists and is publicly mirrored. Its existence and the names it contains are facts. FD-1023 forms record what a confidential source told the FBI; they do not adjudicate the truth of the source's claims, which remain unresolved.
Axon acquired Carbyne for $625 million, announced November 2025 and closed February 2026; had Epstein retained his stake, Forbes estimated it could have been worth over $100 million.
FACTThe acquisition price, announcement date, and close date are confirmed across Axon's own disclosures and multiple business-press outlets. The hypothetical valuation of a retained Epstein stake is Forbes' own estimate, not a disclosed figure from Axon or Carbyne.
What DOJ releases confirmed by 2026, and what still rests on characterization, not documents.
Through 2019, the entire Barak-Carbyne story rested on Israeli press sourcing: Haaretz's scoop on Sum (E.B.) 2015 and Barak's own confirmation to the Times of Israel. That reporting held up. The 2025-2026 DOJ document tranches did not contradict it; they supplied the underlying emails and estate records that the 2019 reporting had described secondhand. The December 2014 negotiation email and Indyke's effort to keep the investment undisclosed are now primary documents, not press paraphrase.
Where the record still stops short is the claim that Barak used his access to open specific US government procurement pathways for Carbyne. No primary document in the current public record shows Barak introducing Epstein, or Carbyne, to a named US procurement official or agency contact. Carbyne's eventual US government and municipal 911 contracts are a matter of public record on their own terms, built over years under multiple ownership changes; nothing currently public ties those specific contracts back to a Barak-brokered introduction. That claim belongs in the SOME_SMOKE tier: plausible given the access Barak had, but without a direct primary source.
The FD-1023 record (EFTA00090314) released in January 2026 deserves the same caution applied elsewhere on this site to confidential-source material. The document's existence, its release date, and the names it contains are facts. What a confidential human source told the FBI is not the same thing as a proven allegation. Readers should treat the FD-1023 as evidence that the FBI received and recorded a specific claim naming Barak and Dershowitz, not as adjudicated fact about either man's conduct.
Carbyne shows Epstein-linked capital surviving inside mainstream venture rounds for years after his death.
The Epstein Class hub tracks how Epstein's money and relationships kept functioning inside legitimate institutions long after his 2019 death. Carbyne is the cleanest example involving a foreign public-safety technology company. Epstein and Barak built the seed structure in 2014-2015. Founders Fund legitimized the company for mainstream venture capital in 2018. a16z, CRV, Y Combinator, and a former CIA director added their names in 2021-2022. Axon, a US public company, bought the result for $625 million in 2025-2026. None of the later money is alleged to have known about the Epstein origin. That is precisely the point: the origin did not need to be known for the asset to keep compounding in value on Epstein's original bet.
The cross-hub connections matter here. Carbyne's 911-dispatch and emergency-communications capability, now inside Axon's US public-safety product line, belongs to the same surveillance-infrastructure story this site tracks in Toka and Unit 8200: Israeli intelligence-adjacent talent building capability that ends up inside US government-facing infrastructure. Barak himself is the bridge figure across both hubs, the same role he plays in Toka's founding story and in the broader Israeli Influence hub's account of intelligence-adjacent business circles.
