The Outrage & Apathy Economy
The hub, restaged as a presenter deck: the pattern it keeps finding, the cases on the record, and the questions still open. The roster reads from the live index, so it stays current as investigations land. Open the full hub.
The Outrage & Apathy Economy
Keep half of us furious, and the other half asleep. A public that is either fighting itself or too numb to look up is a public that does not come after power. Two prongs, one outcome.
Outrage activates; apathy sedates. Between them they cover the whole population — the ones who care are set against each other, and the rest are kept too distracted to join in.
Marx called religion the opium of the people; the feed is its faster successor — and the apathy prong now runs all the way to a values argument for not caring at all.
What this hub is, and is not.
- A record of both halves of one outcome — the outrage that divides the engaged, and the apathy that sedates everyone else — graded on the evidence.
- The mechanism (documents, research, confessions) is graded FACT; the harder causal claims — that a feed caused a mental-health decline — are graded down and labeled.
- The same test is applied to left and right: a manufactured side is a manufactured side regardless of which team is running it.
Prong A — Outrage: keep the engaged fighting each other.
Division is profitable, and the receipts prove it's on purpose. Facebook's own researchers found its algorithms 'exploit the human brain's attraction to divisiveness'; peer-reviewed work shows attacks on the political out-group travel twice as far as anything else.
Prong B — Apathy: keep everyone else numb.
The engagement machine keeps the rest scrolling, comparing, and depleted — documented from Meta's own research and whistleblowers. And at the level of values, a named movement now teaches that empathy itself is a weakness to resist — apathy given a moral blessing.
Manufactured sides, left and right.
On top of the mechanism sit named actors: an operative who confessed his own culture-war brand, a network caught airing a lie it privately disbelieved, a tabloid that inflated a smear — and, tested evenly, disputes over claims on the left. The team changes; the play doesn't.
The builders confessed.
This isn't reconstructed from the outside. The people who designed the engagement machine went on the record about the design, and the culture-war operatives described their own methods in their own words.
how much farther a post attacking the political out-group travels than other content, in peer-reviewed research — the engagement gradient that makes division the profitable default.
PNAS
Division is profitable by design. Facebook's own researchers found its algorithms 'exploit the human brain's attraction to divisiveness' and proposed fixes — which executives shelved. The engagement gradient rewarding out-group attacks is the machine working as built.
The Wall Street Journal's 'Facebook Files' reporting on the internal research and the shelved fixes, with the PNAS engagement finding.
On top of the mechanism sit named actors. A culture-war operative confessed his own branding strategy in a public post; and internal Dominion-suit documents show a network aired a 2020-election lie its own hosts privately disbelieved, to keep its audience.
The operative's own post and the Forbes summary of the Dominion litigation documents.
The hub applies the same test both ways — from a tabloid inflating a smear it couldn't support to disputes over the historical claims of a major left-of-center project — and hostile foreign actors deliberately exploited the identity-division machine, as the Senate Intelligence Committee documented for Russian active measures.
The tabloid correction, the 1619 Project historians' dispute (reported by the Washington Post), and the Senate Intelligence Committee report on Russian active measures.
'Protect the children' runs the same play on a century loop.
- 1950s–60s — the Red Scare and 'subversive' media.
- 1970s–80s — the 'Cult Wars' and deprogramming.
- 1980s–90s — the Satanic Panic and 'hidden messages.'
- 2010s–now — algorithmic and 'grooming' panics (the through-line the Sowing Division hub tracks in full).
The other prong keeps everyone else numb and depleted. Facebook's own research found Instagram harms teenage girls; Meta flagged teens' emotional states to advertisers — including after a girl deleted a selfie — and a 2017 leaked document showed the same emotion-targeting.
The WSJ 'Facebook Files,' the Meta whistleblower's account, and the earlier leaked targeting document.
Apathy is even preached as a virtue: a named movement now recasts empathy itself as a weakness or a sin — a moral blessing for not caring — and some of the same figures pair the anti-empathy turn with fear of the immigrant.
PBS NewsHour's reporting on the 'sin of empathy' argument among some conservative Christians.
The builders said the quiet part out loud — the designers of the attention machine went on the record about how it was built to capture and hold us.
The on-record accounts from the technologists featured in 'The Social Dilemma.'
The hardest link is graded honestly: that algorithmic social media is a major driver of the youth mental-health decline is supported but not settled — a pattern, not a proven cause.
NPR's reporting on the Facebook/Instagram teen-mental-health research; graded PROBABLY_TRUE because causation is not established.
Two prongs, one outcome.
- Division is the profitable default; out-group attacks travel twice as far.
- Named operatives and a network airing a lie it disbelieved.
- The 'protect the children' panic on a century loop.
- An engagement machine that leaves users scrolling and depleted.
- Emotion-targeted ads, down to a teen who deleted a selfie.
- Empathy itself recast as a weakness to resist.
The record, across both prongs. Each opens in a new tab.
Whether algorithmic social media causes — rather than correlates with — the youth mental-health decline is unsettled.
The internal research and outcomes are documented; the causal claim stays at PROBABLY_TRUE, not proven.
Help us fill it →The full extent of emotion-state ad targeting is undisclosed.
Whistleblower accounts and leaked documents establish it happened; the current scale and criteria are not public.
Help us fill it →Which outrage campaigns are coordinated versus emergent is case-by-case.
The mechanism is provable; the coordinating hand behind any given wave is graded separately, and often stays SOME_SMOKE.
Help us fill it →Why it matters now — and where it connects.
The two prongs are one strategy, and the pieces sit across the Audit. Meta and Zuckerberg run into Media Ownership and The Corporate State; Fox and the Dominion documents are Media Ownership by another name; the panic loop, the Russian active measures, and the culture-war operative are the same actors Sowing Division tracks. A furious half and a sedated half add up to a public that never comes after power.
