The Manufactured Center
The hub, restaged as a presenter deck: the pattern it keeps finding, the cases on the record, and the questions still open. The roster reads from the live index, so it stays current as investigations land. Open the full hub.
The Manufactured Center.
'Moderate' is a marketing category before it is a set of beliefs. Follow the money behind the fronts that sell centrism as neutrality — the think tanks, the dark-money PACs, the permanent operatives, and the media reflexes that police the same line.
The 'center' is not a neutral midpoint that emerges from the electorate; much of it is a product — funded by corporate and billionaire money, staffed by permanent operatives, and amplified by media that treat 'moderate' as a synonym for reasonable.
Each front and figure is graded on the donor record and the filings. The rule: name the donors before you print the 'moderate' label.
The fronts: 'moderate' groups funded by the interests the left threatens.
Third Way ('The Rented Center') fights the Democratic left while drawing funding tied to the insurers and Wall Street whose business that left threatens; No Labels ('The Bipartisan Mask') ran on undisclosed dark money; WelcomePAC ('The Billionaires' Big Tent') and the Problem Solvers apparatus channel five- and six-figure gifts, ~75% of individual money from billionaire/finance sources. 'Moderate' describes who pays as much as what is believed.
The conduit: the PAC plumbing that moves the money.
The Problem Solvers PAC ('The Conduit') and the WelcomePAC/No Labels-linked vehicles are the plumbing — the mechanisms that route large corporate and billionaire gifts into 'centrist' candidacies while presenting as grassroots problem-solving. The filings show the concentration: dominated by five- and six-figure donations, not small-dollar support.
The operatives: the permanent class that manufactures the line.
Figures like Mark Penn ('The Permanent Pollster') and members of Congress like Josh Gottheimer ('The Problem Solver' — a top congressional recipient of private-equity money) are the human infrastructure: the pollsters, consultants, and elected 'moderates' who give the manufactured center a face and a voice, race after race.
The enforcement: the media reflex that polices the center.
The center is also enforced in coverage: the 2020 cable reaction to Bernie Sanders — MSNBC's 'The Freakout' and CNN's 'Thumb on the Scale' — shows outlets treating a left challenge to the donor consensus as a threat to be managed rather than a candidacy to be covered. The Sanders pieces are homed in Media Ownership and cross-linked here as the manufactured center's amplification arm.
How this hub is graded.
- FACT: the donor records, filings, and reporting behind each front (Third Way, No Labels, WelcomePAC, Problem Solvers) and each figure (Mark Penn, Gottheimer); the documented 2020 cable coverage of Sanders.
- GRADED PER PIECE: the CNN 'thumb on the scale' read is PROBABLY_TRUE (a pattern argument), not FACT; we mark the difference.
- NOT claimed: that everyone who identifies as a moderate is bought, or that centrism is inherently illegitimate. The claim is narrower — that a funded apparatus manufactures and polices a 'center' and sells it as neutral.
Why it matters.
The word 'moderate' carries an unearned presumption of neutrality — the sensible middle, above the fray. This hub tests that presumption against the money and finds a funded apparatus: think tanks bankrolled by the interests the left threatens, dark-money PACs, a permanent operative class, and a media reflex that polices the same line. It cross-links Return on Investment (the donor ledger these pieces sit in) and The Corporate State. The task it sets, for readers and for the outlets that quote these groups, is simple and rarely done: name the donors before you print the label.
